Ever since Elon Musk bought Twitter (now X), the strategy has evidently been to run the platform into the ground. Musk purchased the social media site under the guise of promoting free speech. However, the kind of speech Musk wants to promote seems questionable at best and criminal at worst.
Research from USC, UCLA, UC Merced, and Oregon State University suggested that the overall volume of hate speech on Twitter doubled after Musk acquired the site. Understandably, most advertisers don’t want to be associated with the Twitter brand with its proliferation of intolerance.
Musk recently threw a tantrum over this, saying advertisers were trying to “blackmail” him. One might think that since Elon is a “businessman,” he would know that an advertiser choosing where to spend their money is not blackmail. Even Paris Hilton knew to pull the plug on her recent Twitter ads.
Musk takes a shot at Paris Hilton (instead of working)
The Paris in Love star began her advertising campaign with Twitter in October this year, promoting her “Be an Icon” kitchenware. However, in November, Paris pulled the plug on the partnership. Page Six reported that Paris removed her ads from the site in response to Musk calling an antisemitic conspiracy theory “the actual truth” on the site.
When a Twitter user reported on Paris’ decision to pull her ads from the site, Elon responded by writing, “The ad campaign wasn’t super convincing tbh. I don’t think Paris cooks a lot.” Reportedly, Musk later apologized for the post. However, the tweet remains on-site with over 200 replies from his loyal, blue check-buying followers.
Once again, considering Elon Musk purports to be a businessman, one would assume he has better things to do than go after reality stars for pulling ads from his terrible pet project. And as Elon continues to tell advertisers to “Go f**k” themselves, the bigger question is whether he truly does want to run Twitter into the ground.
