Leah McSweeney might not be your favorite housewife. But The Real Housewives of New York star has always been open and honest about her life struggles. Which I personally find admirable. Her first season on RHONY showed her breaking 9 years of sobriety while partying with her castmates. And it didn’t go over well for her. By her second season, she was sober again. But her grandmother, who she was extremely close with, was dying. Which would cause anyone mental distress.
Now Leah is opening up about her secret battle with depression while filming season 13 of RHONY. She told Us Weekly, “Season 13 wasn’t the easiest. I was dealing with my grandmother’s death. I was dealing with COVID, you know, depression, just like a lot of other people were.” I find the COVID comment extremely relatable. The pandemic has certainly been hard on so many of us. Leah also contracted COVID, which I’m sure only added to her distress. She said on social media at the time, “Anyone with covid or quarantined, depressed or just feeling down cus the Holidays are a weird ass time.”

Leah continued, “I was struggling with the medication that I was on, and I was put on a different medication for my depression. I talked about it, but like, it didn’t get picked up to follow the story of it.”
She added that maybe it would have been “better to just be like, ‘This is what’s going on with me. And I feel like crap right now, and I’m trying some different antidepressants.’” I agree with this. I think that it’s important to discuss mental health to help break the stigma. Much like featuring Jackie Goldschneider’s eating disorder battle on Real Housewives or New Jersey. I know we watch for the drama and the glamour but housewives are people too.

Leah echoed that sentiment, “I think a lot of people could have related to it because like, who wasn’t [having a difficult time]? We were living in like, a ghost land in the city. And it was such a weird thing to go out outside and [see that] the streets are empty. Like, it just does something to your soul.” Leah added that she was “distraught over it” when speaking about the pandemic. She revealed, “And at the same time, trying to film the show and…this is supposed to be funny and entertaining, but I’m not really feeling funny or feeling like entertaining people.”
As for whether or not Leah will be part of one of the RHONY variations, she stated, “I think it would depend which one and who’s on it and you know, all that.” But she then confirmed that she would join if asked.
