I really thought we were making headway regarding the great cookie debate of the Real Housewives of New Jersey. In the right corner, you have Melissa Gorga, the champion of the sprinkle cookie. The OG, Teresa Giudice, is in the left corner with her pignoli cookie. The holidays are supposed to be about family and making memories. Instead, Melissa and Tre channeled their inner Marie Antoinette as they told one another to “let ‘em eat a cookie.” Ultimately, no one won, and the real losers were all the uneaten cookies that were ruined for nothing.
How did the RHONJ Cookiegate start?
Picture it: Season 3, 2011, Bergen County. Melissa had just been invited to join the Real Housewives of New Jersey, and Tre was not thrilled. For two seasons, she owned the franchise, flipped tables, and manhandled Andy Cohen. Melissa and Joe Gorga were not welcomed and basically missed the message as they fully embraced their new role on reality TV. During the Christmas season, a pregnant Melissa stupidly brought sprinkle cookies to the Giudice home, not knowing they were a Pignoli household. I swear it was like watching someone cross a picket line.
In all her glory, Teresa retold the harrowing experience she was forced to endure. In her own words, she told the cast, “She brought me sprinkle cookies. Melissa, nobody touched your cookies you brought. I threw them in the garbage.” Caroline Manzo said it all with her eyes rolling as I couldn’t help but think that any child would have enjoyed one of those cookies. Tre continued, “You know what my favorite cookies are? Pignoli cookies. That’s what I said.” As Teresa sat feeling vindicated, everyone wondered if they should be checking on Cookie Monster.
C is for cookie not comradery in RHONJ
Consequently, Melissa wasn’t thrilled with the insult. In her confessional, she noted, “Throwing a pregnant woman’s cookies in the garbage is not funny, and it’s not a dig. It’s just plain stupid.” However, it wasn’t just about the cookies, as Real Housewives of New Jersey fans really started to see the cracks within the family’s foundation. But after years of feuding, the women seemed to put the debate about butter cookies behind them. In 2019, the duo noted that the “feud was over.” In Season 10, the cookie drama finally seemed to come to an end.
The Gorgas were invited over for Easter, and there was a large platter of sprinkle cookies. Melissa was thrilled with her gag gift as she noted, “I brought you sprinkle cookies.” In a change of tune, Tre giggled and accepted the cookies, adding, “They’re just what I wanted!” Melissa touched on the famous feud, explaining, “I was pregnant at the time and wanted the sugary, bright, colorful sprinkle cookies.” Even though Teresa turned over a new leaf, she still maintained that she didn’t like the dessert as they had no taste.
Melissa Gorga launches her own sprinkle cookie
Just when I thought the cookie debate was over, Melissa had to go and stir up the drama. The mother of three took to her Instagram to announce her very own brand of sprinkle cookie. Insert melodic (‘yay’). In a very festive photo complete with sprinkles falling from the sky, Melissa announced her big news. Additionally, she wrote “Introducing Sprinkle by MG! My passion for sprinkle cookies is finally available for you! With @sprinklebymg. The ultimate sprinkle butter cookie that’s as chic as it is delicious! Trust me… you will NOT want to throw these in the garbage.”
What fresh hell is this? (Did I type that out loud?) But really, come on, Melissa! Now, I could get behind a cookie made by Kathy Wakile. That woman could bake. But we’ve never seen Melissa bake on the Real Housewives of New Jersey. Further, I can’t say I appreciate Missy G’s business savvy right now. Melissa urged her followers not to miss out and “order now and make your celebrations even sweeter!” A pack of 12 will set you back $29.99, but you can choose from four different sprinkle colors. I just know Teresa is stewing, but that is how the cookie crumbles in the Garden State.
The Real Housewives of New Jersey can be streamed on Peacock.
