Selena Gomez Responds To Eugenio Derbez’s Critique of Her Spanish Accent

Selena Gomez recently replied to Eugenio Derbez’s criticism of her accent in Jacques Audiard’s latest movie, “Emilia Pérez.” Derbez appeared in a recent episode of the “Hablando de Cine” podcast and criticized the actor’s Spanish accent and her lack of fluency. He called Gomez’s performance in the film “indefensible,” with the podcast’s host Gaby Meza also pointing out the same.

After a clip from the interview went viral on TikTok, Gomez defended her performance in the film. She commented on the post, “I did the best I could with the time I was given.” Later, Derbez also issued a statement apologizing to the Rare Beauty founder for his “careless comments.”

Selena Gomez’s comment on the viral TikTok clip of Eugenio Derbez’s criticism of her “Emilia Pérez” accent directly responds to his disapproval. Gomez wrote, “I understand where you are coming from,” while noting that she tried her “best” in the time she had. She added that her accent “doesn’t take away from how much work and heart I put into this movie.” The Hollywood Reporter stated that the 32-year-old singer later clapped back at Derbez with another remark. “Also do not ever say my fans are the problem standing up, as you say, for me,” she wrote.

Derbez then dropped a response post to Gomez’s comment, apologizing to her for his “careless comments.” The “CODA” actor called his previous remarks “indefensible,” claiming they “go against everything I stand for.” He further wrote how there’s “no excuse” for the statements he made earlier. “As Latinos, we should always support one another,” wrote the 63-year-old, once again emphasizing that he was “wrong.” Lastly, he commended Gomez for her “kind heart” and expressed his admiration for her career.

Concluding his note, Eugenio Derbez replied to Selena Gomez’s comment and wrote about the “important lesson” he learned after the “thoughtless” criticism. He finally mentioned that the apology came from his heart and also understood if Gomez “cannot accept” it.

Derbez previously said, “Selena is indefensible” for her role in Emilia Pérez. He then recalled watching the movie with people, saying, “Every time a scene came [with her in it], we looked at each other to say, ‘Wow, what is this?'”

Meanwhile, Gomez has received several accolades for her role in the film, including the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival.
