Once again, the creator of Love Is Blind is defending his “experiment.” At this point, it’s become a semiannual argument because, over the years, the production has faced scrutiny from every possible direction.
Participants of the show have criticized the production for depriving them of food and water while overserving alcohol. Meanwhile, viewers have been turned off because every season, at least one person in the pods has a sordid past. Despite the frequent controversies, creator Chris Coelen claims they’re doing their best.
Trust the experiment
Season 7 of Love Is Blind just concluded, and like most seasons, it was full of plot twists. One participant, Tyler Francis, revealed that he had three children under questionable circumstances. Meanwhile, Nick Dorka got exposed during the reunion for joining the show just to be the “most famous person” to ever do the experiment.
It’s these types of red flags that make the show seem suspicious. However, Chris assured The Hollywood Reporter that they do their due diligence when casting.
“We have background checks and psychological evaluations. Everyone in the world has a story and we aren’t the police,” Chris argued.
Although Love is Blind has had more failures than success stories, Chris continued to defend their vetting process. According to him, they don’t cast people based on their life experiences. Instead, they want to “provide them a forum” to be honest about their lives, no matter how messy. That’s why Tyler’s secret past wasn’t a dealbreaker for his casting.
“Hopefully in the process because it contributes to them being in love, be very open and transparent with each other, even though some topics that can be very difficult,” Chris explained. “It’s not our obligation to report to everyone everything that you might find interesting. That’s not really our place, because our job is to document that.”
All seven seasons of Love Is Blind are streaming on Netflix, and Season 8 premieres on February 14, 2025.
