Welcome to the Summer House Season 8, Episode 6 recap! In this week’s episode, titled “Start Your Engines,” Kyle and Amanda are fighting again, which makes everyone else uncomfortable. Carl opts for a Saturday morning arrival to avoid another Friday Night Fight. At the backyard “Hamptons Raceway,” the girls support Lindsay while the guys ask Carl if he really knows what he’s getting into. Here are some of the highlights from Summer House Season 8, Episode 6.
Mom and Dad are fighting again
Craig is up from Charleston to spend a weekend with Paige. But at dinner on Friday night, Kyle astonishes the table by taking a jab at Jesse over how hard he was hitting on Paige the first couple of weekends.
After a shocked silence, Craig calmly says, “She’s a pretty girl. I would, too.” He’s not bothered in the least. But Amanda’s pissed for some reason.
“Why would you do that?” she says. “The way that I am going to murder you in your sleep tonight … You have no idea.” Yikes. Over-reaction much?
“Amanda,” Kyle responds. “Will you relax? You’re, like, wound up like a ball of yarn.”
Uh oh. Mom and Dad are fighting again. Everyone at the table just looks uncomfortable.
“Dude, you’ve been giving me non-stop sh*t ever since I walked in the house, aside from that one kiss you gave me,” he says.
In a confessional, Amanda says, “Kyle clearly does not think before he speaks. Just, like, put some thought behind your words and don’t just say things … Use those little ears, Kyle. Shut your big mouth.”
Though I feel bad that he snapped at her, she did take the first shot. I thought we got past this bullsh*t, but we’re right back where we started in Episode 1.
“I’m f*cking pissed,” she says. “You looked like a f*cking asshole.”
“Why are you so worked up?” Kyle asks. Yeah, I want to know, too.
“Because it was f*cked up to do,” she answers before stomping out of the room. “Have some respect for people.”
Kyle has a heart-to-heart with Lindsay
At the bar, Kyle pulls Lindsay for a “quick chat.” As they leave to find a quiet space, Amanda comments, “Honestly, they should just marry each other.” Why so angry, ‘Manda?
Kyle tells Lindsay, “Last weekend [you said], ‘Kyle, you’re biased. You don’t have my back.’ … As friends to both of you, I hear the pain in both of your voices.”
“Ever since I got serious with Amanda,” Kyle continues, “[Carl’s] wanted a relationship. He’s told me that for years … [Now] this wedding’s happening [and he’s] so committed to seeing this thing through, he’s pushing through some of the red flags.”
“What do you mean that he’s ‘so committed to seeing it through?” Lindsay asks, no longer smiling.
“I know he loves and he wants this so bad,” Kyle continues. “I want you guys to … try to work through some of this stuff.”
“But if I have one sip of alcohol,” she argues, “and I have an emotion other than happy, it’s a problem. If I’m happy, he’s totally fine … But if I have something else in me … he totally cannot handle it.”
“He’s constantly, like, ‘How many drinks have you had? Are you drunk?’” she continues. “If you’re going to continue judging me … unless you’re f*cking perfect, I’m gonna question you on the things that you do. Why does he care so much that I’m drinking alcohol?”
Here’s where I think Lindsay has no idea how hard sobriety is for Carl. He’s choosing to never drink alcohol or do drugs again. It’s just not healthy for Carl to be around people who are drinking when he’s trying to live a sober life. Basically, Lindsay might have needed some understanding or compassion for the man she supposedly loves.
The Hamptons Raceway
Carl finally arrives, on Saturday morning, like he said he would. “The reason I didn’t come Friday night,” he explains in a confessional, “is because of Lindsay’s and [my] fighting. I am all for anything that gets us into a better routine or rhythm. So, I’m just ready to get back to having a fun time and enjoying our weekends.”
Carl brought a blowup racetrack and go-karts for the housemates to race. They set everything up in the backyard. Racing is the theme for the weekend, and Carl brought balloons and banners to decorate the yard.
“Carl seems to be in a really good headspace,” Lindsay interviews. “This is the last summer before we get married [and] potentially have kids. So, let’s just have fun.”
While preparing a shopping list for the party, Kyle asks what kind of “protein” they have in the house. Amanda snaps at him, “Look in the refrigerator, Kyle. With your eyes.” Wow. That was harsh.
“Today’s about having a good time at the party,” Kyle interviews. “I don’t want to fight with her. I don’t think she wants to fight with me.” Are you sure about that, Kyle?
When the backyard is all decked out as a racetrack, Carl drives around the corner of the house in a red Corvette with “Official Pace Car of the 70th Indianapolis 500” painted on the side. It’s been a while, though, because the date says May 25, 1986. It’s a nice touch, though.
Differing opinions
“Last summer, I just was very uncomfortable,” Lindsay tells Paige and Amanda. “There was so much … judgment.”
“Do you think you guys moved a little fast?” Amanda asks.
“He thought [we’d] get into a relationship, and I was gonna change,” Lindsay admits.
“I don’t think Carl thought, ‘She’s gonna change for me,’” Amanda says in a confessional. “Carl thought, ‘Because we’re madly in love and we’re gonna get married,’ she would have a little bit more respect for him.” Do you hear what you’re saying, Amanda?
Over with the guys, Carl shares, “The last two Fridays with Lindsay [haven’t] been great. But I’ve learned some things in couples therapy. Listen, I’m fully willing to … look at going to anger management.”
“Do you think you’re angry?” Jesse asks.
“Sounds like you’re making a lot of concessions,” Craig adds.
“[That translates to] resentment,” Kyle comments. “That will destroy a relationship.”
Meanwhile, Paige says, “I am very much on your side. You two will get into a fight, and everyone will say … ‘I feel so bad for Carl.’”
“Cause I’m … the louder one,” Lindsay agrees, “I’m the one to blame.”
“Couples fight,” says Carl. “[But] we fight a lot. At what point is the fighting healthy?”
“It’s not our place to give you advice,” Jesse says, “but … it feels very soon to be getting married, given the complications.”
Paige says, “I said it to Amanda … before she got married. Are you positive? If you’re not, it’s way easier to call off or postpone a wedding than it is to get divorced two months later.”
