Though Vanderpump Rules was a 2023 Emmy nominee, the show ultimately lost to Ryan Reynolds. Well, duh. He’s Ryan Reynolds.
The Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards took place on January 7. Welcome to Wrexham snatched the award out of the hands of Lisa Vanderpump in the Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program category. Rob McElhenney and Ryan are both executive producers on the show.
In the wake of Season 10, where fans saw Scandoval stir up drama among the cast, Pump Rules received its first Emmy nomination. The main filming for the season had already concluded when Ariana Madix made a fateful discovery. She found evidence in her longtime partner Tom Sandoval’s phone of an affair with their friend Rachel Leviss. Cameras were quickly called back in to capture the ensuing chaos.
Deadpool accepts for Ryan and Rob
Interrupting a pre-taped thank you message from Rob, Ryan’s Deadpool character thanked Wrexham “for letting Rob and the other guy tell your story … I’d also like to thank The Academy for this honor and for not asking us to attend the televised awards show with the real celebrities.”
“I’d also like to thank FX and Disney for their support … In exchange, Mr. Lively promises to not f*ck up my next movie,” the Marvel character continued. “Lastly, Oscars, you’re on notice motherf*ckers. Maybe we can get a token VFX nod next year. The amount of work on Hugh and Ryan’s face[s] alone is at least worth a nom.”
Referring to himself as “Mr. Lively” is a reference to Ryan’s wife, actress Blake Lively. The parents of four have been married since 2012 and are known for loving to frequently poke fun at each other on social media.
Not only did Wrexham win the Emmy for Outstanding Reality Program, but they took home two others as well. They won the Emmy for Outstanding Directing and for Outstanding Picture Editing for a Reality Program.
The FX/Disney series had some stiff competition besides VPR. Selling Sunset, RuPaul’s Drag Race, and Indian Matchmaking were in the same category.
Better luck next time, Vanderpump Rules. The former SUR-vers had better bring it for Season 11 if they want another shot at an Emmy. It will be hard to top Scandoval.
