The reality TV world was rocked to its core when RHOM star Guerdy Abraira told the public she was diagnosed with breast cancer. But the Real Housewives of Miami fan favorite made it clear that she didn’t want pity; she was going to take control of her diagnosis as much as possible.
Presently, Guerdy is finishing up her radiation treatment. Even as the journey comes to an end, Guerdy’s not poised to forget the experience. Ahead of RHOM Season 6’s premiere, the prestigious event planner has opened up further about the experience.
Renowned for her career, her TV appearances, and her family dealings, Guerdy had to admit that cancer was a challenge she wasn’t ready to face. As someone so used to control, the unpredictability of her diagnosis left her with a new hurdle to overcome.
Guerdy’s cancer journey: “Self-discovery of no ending”
Guerdy recently spoke with NBC6 about her journey through breast cancer. “Now, I’m the problem. That’s how I took it,” she reflected. “‘OMG, I’m causing a problem, everyone is going to have to stop and help me,’ and I’m not that person. I’m not a taker, I’m a giver, I’m a fixer, I’m the one that you come to when you got problems.”
For Guerdy, the experience was filled with unexpected turns. “It’s been a whirlwind, it’s been a self-discovery of no ending because every time I thought it was going to be one thing, it’s going to be OK, ‘you won’t need chemo’, look at me I have chemo, no hair.” She described the decision to shave her head as “the only control I had.”
When considering advice for other women and fellow cancer patients, Guerdy said, “Be aware of yourself and your body. Listen to your body. Make it a priority and make it proactive as well. You have to be selfish, just take care of yourself; if you’re not good enough to take care of others, what good are you?”
The Real Housewives of Miami Season 6 premiere airs November 1 at 9 p.m. ET on Bravo.
