Leah McSweeney And Tinsley Mortimer Explain Why They Didn’t Vote In 2016 Presidential Election; Leah Says We Should, “Get Rid Of Presidents”

The last time fans heard the Real Housewives of New York talk politics, it was during the fallout of the 2016 presidential election.  Carole Radziwill took it especially hard.  She threw a party on election night in order to celebrate the first female elected president but ended up experiencing the 5 stages of grief instead.

Fast forward to the next major political and current events and once again, the ladies of RHONY are sharing their thoughts.  Specifically Leah McSweeney and the newly-relocated Tinsley Mortimer.  Leah’s political leanings may be easy to predict.   Her “Occupy the Hamptons,” as Sonja Morgan called it, meltdown was quite spectacle.  Urban anarchism suites Leah.  But what do we know about Tinsley and her thoughts on governance?

Both Leah and Tinsley appeared remotely on Watch What Happens Live this week to explain why they did not vote in the last presidential election and how they view politics in general.

Tinsley explained that her lack of participation in 2016 was merely a practical issue.  She had just moved to New York from Florida to join the show.   “When I came on the show, I didn’t know that I was going to do the show.  It kinda happened fast,”  Tinsley said.

By the time Tinsley realized she would be settling in New York, it was too late to file for an absentee ballot.  “I guess I started filming in like the end of October and then I couldn’t…I didn’t know that I was going to be in New York at the time.  So I didn’t fly back down to vote in Florida.  My registration was in Florida at the time.”

Leah, on the other hand, chose not to vote.  “I didn’t vote.  That was the one presidency,” she said.

She revealed that she is disillusioned with the system and did not feel inspired by either of the presidential candidates.  “I didn’t [vote],” Leah said, “yeah.  People were really upset with me.  I honestly was just disgusted all around.”

Leah thinks radical changes are needed.  “I honestly feel like we should get rid of presidents.  I don’t know why we have one person representing an entire country,” she opined, “and my father’s like ‘it’s been going on for 200 years,’ but it seems so archaic to me.  Like why can’t we have a group of very smart people make the decisions.”

Tinsley made an interesting point about how the coronavirus changed her perception of government structures.  “I feel like this has been my first experience of actually thinking that there isn’t just one person because since each governor is basically able, with Covid-19 to be able to open up each state and whether they want to,” Tinsley said, “this is the first time I’ve been like, ‘wait there isn’t just one person.’  The governors actually do have a big say.  So I’m just saying, that’s been new to me”

Leah may be the cast anarchist, but there was one presidential hopeful that she admired.  “I have a lot of, you know, out there I guess views on things I guess,” she said, “because I really don’t trust anyone that’s a politician which is why I really loved Andrew Yang.  Because he’s not a politician.”
