Shep Rose has had quite a season on Southern Charm. His witty personality and the size of his ego wallet made him one of the more watchable characters in the past. Eternally single, his lack of relationship and hilarious antics became a recurring theme of the show. As his popularity quickly increased, Bravo spawned a spin-off program for the favored bachelor, chronicling his search to find love. Spoiler alert, he didn’t find love.
We have seen another side of Shep this year. A side not quite so charming, a tad less humorous than in the past. Austen Kroll’s girlfriend, Madison LeCroy has been the new target of Shep’s thinly-veiled insults. Shep has been unable to hide being butthurt his disparaging thoughts on his friend’s relationship. Shep even referred to Madison as “white trash,” a taunt not lost on his castmates. He also implied Austen needs to control his woman, as Madison is not one to slink away from Shep’s petty intimidation attempts. While Madison’s mouth has gotten her into a caldron of hot water, Shep is not to be outdone. Recently, the 39-year-old man pulled a stunt. Another action he thought was terribly amusing. In the wake of posting an extremely insulting video of a homeless woman, Shep is hiding trying to manage the fallout of his ignorance.
Southern Charm has been on our screens since 2014, at this point Shep is a reality television veteran. A cast member since day one, he cannot call himself an ingenue. Exactly what was Shep thinking when he posted a video to his Instagram Story, mocking a homeless woman collecting cans? Short answer, he wasn’t thinking at all. Under the demeaning recording he wrote, “Look at me! Nice cans! I mean the cans you have!”
The post has since been deleted, but Shep went out of his way to defend himself as commenters criticized his blatant disrespect. To one followerer, he wrote, “Omg. I offended you! Ok. Here’s the plan, sensitivity training 5 times a week. Then intensive therapy (hot yoga?) followed by a public flogging in the town square.Then i move to Siberia and live in an igloo for 4 months. At this point. I think I’ll be cleansed of your disapproval.” What a complete display of being a twat waffle insensitivity. Thankfully the Twitterverse wasn’t letting this slide.

Shep ultimately issued an apology for his lack of education poor decision and stated, “I know some people were upset about the video from Sunday night. It was a stupid joke and bad idea all around. Also a bit out of context. I spent a few minutes with her talking and telling jokes. She laughed a little. But Yeah, wasn’t cool or funny. Mea culpa.” That’s nice but doesn’t make Shep any less of a raging asshole what is wrong in today’s society.
As a result of his foolish move, Shep has deleted his Twitter account. According to Page Six, his profile is as active as Thomas Ravenel’s integrity, meaning it’s gone bye-bye. Before running away suspending his social media, Shep wrote, “I feel absolutely sick about all that’s transpired this week. I’ve compounded stupidity upon stupidity. Just know that I never intended to hurt anyone. And I do enjoy sharing my adventures and thoughts with you. But I blew it. Anyway, gonna take a little break. And look inward.” In an environment where bullying and shaming people online has become front and center in the news, Shep thought to say, “I never intended to hurt anyone”. Did he simply intend to make fun of someone struggling to survive? Just being randomly unkind for kicks?

What’s next for Shep, after his public display of shallowness? Many fans have completely turned on the former cast favorite. It looks like he has some major damage control coming his way. Perhaps he could join Ashley Jacobs on a Southern Charm sponsored apology tour? Could he move forward and educate himself about the homeless crisis?
Maybe instead of watching lint collect on his carpet during the day, he could volunteer at a homeless shelter. Making a reasonable financial contribution to an organization supporting homeless families would certainly not hurt. Running off and waiting for this to “all go away” isn’t the answer. Hopefully Shep allows the incident to become a teaching moment to learn from and never repeat. The bright light of celebrity is great until it shows who you really are.
