Here’s Why Rebecca Minkoff Is a Slow Burn on RHONY

I have to admit. I wasn’t a fan of the idea when I heard Rebecca Minkoff would join the Real Housewives of New York cast. Viewers were already getting used to a new set of women just one season prior, and it felt like Rebecca might have been a random choice. But I can report that I think I was wrong in my quick judgment.

Rebecca Minkoff has been called boring

The fashion designer was quickly dubbed boring by viewers shortly after the Season 15 premiere. The mother of four didn’t really understand reality TV’s premise and felt more like an ornament than a full-time RHONY member. Even her former cast member, Sai De Silva, got caught on a hot mic moment calling her boring while being interviewed on a podcast. She talked out of turn during a commercial break during the Jeff Lewis Show, noting, “She’s nice. She’s really, really nice, but she’s kind of boring, to be honest. She’s too nice for the show.”

As the season has unraveled, it has become evident that some have tried their best to take her down. As a viewer, it feels like Rebecca is trying to protect her image as she does have a business to protect, but at some point, she is going to have to open up or quit the show. Currently, Rebecca is just starting to warm up to the idea of standing up for herself. There has already been one too many times when the Scientologist seemingly has been walked over by some of the others, and that isn’t exactly fun to watch.

Rebecca Minkoff has beef with Brynn Whitfield

Brynn Whitfield keeps coming for her, yet she doesn’t respond most of the time. However, during the recent Real Housewives of New York episode, Rebecca struck a nerve with Brynn. After the self-proclaimed flirtation regulated Rebecca to a shared room during their Puerto Rico vacation, the designer hatched a plan to annoy her frenemy. Rebecca was trying to explain why having her own room was so important to her, only to continuously be shut down. She told Brynn, “You’ll know when you have them.” As fans know, Brynn has been trying to figure out her path to motherhood, and the comment could have been taken as cruel

But the quip was perfect and planned. The comment made by Rebecca riled Brynn up for the entire evening as she walked around telling anyone who would listen about the insult. Rebecca finally started to get interesting as she said, “I have four kids, and I shared with Jessel last time in Anguilla, and I was just looking for, like, a break.” Brynn, who could clearly care less, noted, “I have a puppy. We all have very busy lives … It doesn’t matter if you have kids or not.” Finally, Rebecca started to grow a backbone with these women.

Rebecca Minkoff will give RHONY some drama

The drama has arrived, and we have Rebecca to thank. I know. I am surprised, too. During the first dinner, Rebecca finally hits her limit with Brynn’s “bullying” methods. Before the appetizers could be served, the two were going at it in the restaurant. Now, I did not think I would be seeing Rebecca engage in such a fight. But I am here for it. However, I can do without her silly pregnancy prank. As Brynn geared up for the takedown, Rebecca sat back and plotted her next move. She confidently told Brynn, “You have been rude almost since we met. You haven’t taken any time to get me at all.”

Okay, so what I liked about Rebecca and her slow-burn appeal to the franchise is the fact that she can argue without yelling. And directly explain her points with clear facts. Her technique is amazing. And it seems I am not the only one who is excited to see this side of Rebecca. It turns out all she needed was a little vacay to get her thoughts together. Becks might be the bone collector of the Big Apple. Only time will tell. But I finally feel like there might be a spot for her next season if she keeps up the good work.

The Real Housewives of New York airs Tuesday on Bravo.
