“Dysfunctional” would be a gross understatement when describing Kim Zolciak’s ongoing mess of a divorce from Kroy Biermann and tremendous financial ruin. So much so, that she seemed to find respite from all of that in a usually chaotic situation: filming a reality show. Specifically, Surreal Life: Villa of Secrets.
Kim recently talked about how escaping from her current reality for two weeks to film gave her a minute to exhale.
Kim: Filming Surreal Life “definitely was therapeutic”
As we know, Kim and Kroy have been fighting like cats and dogs, often leading to police involvement. They owe everyone money. Their manse is about to be foreclosed upon and won’t sell, despite several price reductions. Their dogs have even been trying to make a run for it.
However, the Real Housewives of Atlanta and Don’t Be Tardy alum recently talked to PEOPLE about her positive experience filming Surreal Life. She says that during her two short weeks away in Medellín, she was able to catch her breath.
Kim began, “The Surreal Life was one of the most incredible experiences in my life.”
She went into the house with a goal, though she was unfamiliar with what the show entailed. “My goal going on the show — which I’ve never watched an episode of in real life, and I intentionally didn’t watch any when I decided to join the show because I didn’t want to have any inhibitions — [was that I] needed some time away from the actual house to gain some clarity going through this divorce and focus more back on Kim.”
Kim touched on some of the healing that she and her seven other celebrity castmates had while filming.
“It definitely was therapeutic. A lot of the experiences, including the breath work, was a big one for me. I’m always on and I mask some of the pain and stuff with being funny, and so that was a really big moment for me. That was pretty life-changing. Just having that release was great and that’s kind of how we started off the show. So I was like, ‘Okay, I’m in. This is going to be incredible, the next two weeks.’”
Kim and her villa mates are still close after their shared experience
Kim shared that she and her castmates have stayed in touch since filming wrapped last fall. “Surreal Life was like a breath of fresh air for me, and I actually had tears in my eyes when I left everybody. It was pretty unbelievable the family we became in just those two weeks and the connections that we made.”
Notably, she revealed that she keeps in frequent contact with her rumored show hook-up, Chet Hanks.
