Below Deck Med Bosun Iain Maclean Defends Naming Joe Bradley as Lead Deckhand

Below Deck Mediterranean star Iain Maclean has been in the hot seat as of late. The bosun has made some questionable decisions that did not sit right with Captain Sandy Yawn and the rest of the deck team. However, instead of taking responsibility for any mistakes, Iain is defending his actions. And one of those is promoting Joe Bradley to lead deckhand right away.

Iain immediately named Joe lead deckhand to not “cause tensions”

There’s trouble on deck for Iain. The bosun has had one screw-up after the other but does not admit fault or try to learn from the various situations. Instead, he smiles and says “copy” to please Captain Sandy so she’ll leave him alone. Unfortunately, when Sandy looks at him all she sees are red flags

He’s made several errors, such as instructing Gael Cameron to leave the swim platform to take a break, but then there was no one watching the guests. And Nathan Gallagher and one of the charter guests almost drifted out to sea. Iain also left the batteries for the tender on overnight so they couldn’t use that to transport guests. He also instructed the crew to store items in the guest area. All major no-nos.

Another objectionable choice was when Iain promoted Joe to lead deckhand without knowing his work ethic or even telling Captain Sandy. Iain recently appeared on Watch What Happens Live in order to defend his actions regarding promoting Joe so soon. Andy Cohen explained the game to Iain. He said, “Okay Iain, now it’s your turn to go on the defensive. Sine Joe and Nathan were here last week and could not justify some of your actions, we’re giving you the chance to exonerate yourself. It’s time to defend your actions!”

Andy asked, “Can you defend naming Joe the lead deckhand right away instead of waiting to see how everyone worked on deck?” Iain replied, “Yes, I can definitely defend it. If you don’t name someone lead deckhand straight away, they end up having people fighting and can cause tensions. And I just didn’t want that from the get go.” It could also be said that promoting someone too soon could backfire as you don’t know their strengths and weaknesses yet.

Andy then asked, “Can you then defend selecting Joe for lead deckhand and not telling Captain Sandy about it?” Iain looked like he already had forgotten about that snafu. He responded, “That was just an honest mistake. You know, so busy, so many things to do. Just something that slipped my mind. There was a lot more other things happening at the time.”

Iain’s answer didn’t go over well as Andy had given him a look like he wasn’t buying what he was selling. And Iain didn’t look too confident either. However, he still stands by his decision to promote Joe.

Below Deck Mediterranean airs Mondays at 9/8c on Bravo.

TELL US – DO YOU AGREE WITH IAIN PROMOTING JOE QUICKLY SO THERE WOULDN’T BE ANY FIGHTING AMONGST THE DECK CREW? DO YOU THINK IAIN WILL STAY ON AS BOSUN FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON?
