The Summer House cast was as shocked as the rest of the world when Carl Radke and Lindsay Hubbard called off their engagement just weeks before their wedding. Well, maybe not quite as shocked since they’d had a front-row seat to all the screaming and fighting that went on all summer.
Most of the cast heard the news the way the rest of us did, via social media. But Kyle Cooke, along with his wife Amanda Batula, had an inside track on the situation. Kyle and Carl had filmed together that morning.
Carl was looking for a sounding board, so producers had told Kyle, “Don’t say anything that’s gonna steer him in one direction or the other. Just listen to him and be a supportive friend.”
Kyle was there for Carl
Amanda told castmate Danielle Olivera that she advised her husband to put his feelings about Lindsay aside and just be there for his friend. He was there strictly to listen, not advise.
When he returned home, Kyle didn’t indicate Carl’s decision either way. Amanda says she found out about the breakup when Paige DeSorbo messaged her a screenshot that Carl had called off the wedding.
Neither Ciara Miller nor Paige was really shocked that the wedding was canceled. “It kind of made sense,” Jesse Solomon added.
“I was really proud of them when I saw it,” Paige confessed. “I was, like, you guys made a very mature decision.” Paige mentioned that Lindsay had wanted to have a baby immediately. She thought it would be really “unfair” to bring a child into such a volatile relationship that was bound to fail.
The right thing
Carl says he was being compared to Tom Sandoval for a while, which was really unfair. The crazy rumors were rampant. Paparazzi were waiting for him every morning when he came out of his apartment building.
To give Lindsay some space after the breakup, “I got a hotel room that night, down the street the night at a hotel that … I had stayed at before when we’d been in serious conflict.”
Carl said when he walked into the hotel lobby, he was crying and upset, and the front desk attendant was concerned about him. He got his key and went up to his room. “Two minutes later, a knock on the door,” Carl recalled.
“Mr. Radke, we’re so sorry you’re going through a tough time,” a hotel employee said. “We have a fresh bottle of wine for you from the front desk.” He explained that he didn’t drink, thanked them, and closed the door. Thank goodness he kept his cool. He could’ve sent himself right back into his addiction and had to start all over again.
“I feel bad because [Lindsay]’s hurt,” Carl admitted. “I genuinely, deep down, feel sorry that she’s hurt. But we were not right to be married.”
The two-part Summer House Season 8 reunion begins Thursday, June 6 at 9/8c on Bravo.
