Dance Moms’ Chloe Lukasiak Grateful for ‘Manufactured’ Maddie Ziegler Rivalry

Time heals all wounds — including those inflicted by Abby Lee Miller. As the Dance Moms cast reunites for their Lifetime special, Chloe Lukasiak is looking back on her experience with the show. Some of the former kids from the series needed therapy to process their experiences, but Chloe said there are some parts of her Dance Moms era that she’s grateful for, like her on-screen rivalry with Maddie Ziegler.

Of course, Maddie was the one who was always on top of Abby’s pyramid. She always got the solos. Meanwhile, Chloe would work her butt off to try to get the same level of recognition. It was strangely entertaining to watch, but presumably not fun to live — especially when the moms started fighting about it. In a chat with Page Six, Chloe opened up about the messy rivalry with Maddie.

Chloe found a silver lining

“I am so grateful that I experienced the show exactly as I did because it’s made me into who I am,” Chloe revealed.

Despite the drama that Abby would stir up for ratings, Chloe explained how her rivalry with Maddie felt like healthy competition. She said it made her challenge herself to do her best. Plus, watching Abby dog people out every day helped her gain some empathy skills.

“Even though it was manufactured — and I really dive into this on the reunion — and even though I believe it was unnecessary because I believe natural competition blooms at dance competitions, that is kinda the whole point of them, it was nice to kind of always be on the edge of my seat,” Chloe explained.

Looking ahead at the Dance Moms reunion, Chloe said she’s excited to give a voice to her reality TV experience. When they originally filmed the show, she and the rest of the dancers didn’t have much of a say. They were just kids. Now that they’re in their twenties, Chloe said that she and the rest of the Dance Moms girls are well-equipped to have even more insightful conversations about the show.

“No one will understand what we went through on the show,” Chloe reflected, “especially that certain group of girls.”

Dance Moms: The Reunion premieres on Wednesday, May 1 at 8/7c on Lifetime.
