Captain Kerry Titheradge isn’t above firing a crew member for not thriving in the environment. Bosun Jared Woodin was terminated in such a manner. He became scattered with his disposition after personal issues regarding contact with his daughter.
During the latest episode of Below Deck, Chef Anthony Iracane was let go for a series of mistakes that resulted in the lowest tip of the season. Nobody enjoyed watching the French native in tears over the firing and taking it all so much to heart.
Here’s what went down after Anthony was called into the wheelhouse at the end of the April 22 episode.
Kerry thinks yachting isn’t “the right environment”
“I think you’re an incredible chef. Your food is absolutely amazing,” Captain Kerry told Anthony. “But, you’re starting to kind of nosedive.”
“I don’t really know what you’re talking about,” he responded in shock.
To be fair, mistakes with preferences and timing were continuous. And with Anthony’s emotions spiraling, it made sense why the captain felt he had no other choice.
“So why are people telling me every day that I’m the most amazing chef in the world?” Anthony questioned. “So, either people [are] full of sh-t, or…”
“This is not the right environment for you, mate. You’re not flourishing here… If I keep you here any longer, I’m going to set you up for disaster,” Kerry countered. “I’m doing you a favor.”
The chef continued the conversation in a state of shock. “The first time ever in my life,” he said.
“I have a lot of respect for you, mate,” the Australian captain said before shaking the chef’s hand. “A lot.”
“I’m shock[ed],” Anthony said during a confessional interview. “That’s not real. It’s not possible.”
Anthony’s former co-stars react
For his part, Kerry called the firing “heartbreaking” while speaking to producers.
“I don’t like this at all. The crew was starting to notice where the chef was failing us,” he explained. “If I keep this guy any longer, morale will be terrible, and I can’t have that.”
Chief Stew Fraser Olender took the firing to heart as well. His testimony to Captain Kerry was pivotal in Anthony’s firing.
“This has nothing to do with you,” the chief stew comforted in his friend. “You are the kindest and nicest chef I’ve worked with. This reflects on how difficult it is to work in yachting.”
In Anthony’s exit interview, he revealed the extent to which he bonded with the rest of the crew.
“I love everyone, and I’m going to miss them so much,” he said. “The only thing I need is cooking for people. The only thing [that] make[s] me happy.”
Meanwhile, the rest of the crew was in shock that three people had been fired thus far.
