Why None of Kody Brown’s Children Want To Be a Polygamist

Kody Brown is the bane of Sister Wives existence due to his seemingly narcissistic ways. During Season 1, the patriarch bragged about how great it was to be a practicing polygamist, but his children never seemed enamored by the practice. None of the Brown children have chosen to live in a plural marriage, and I think that is pretty telling. The principle that Kody, Meri Brown, Janelle Brown, Robyn Brown, and Christine Brown have centered their entire lives around has been rejected by the children that were raised within it.

Kody’s Marriages Were Toxic

Over the years, Kody has expressed a desire for the children to choose plural marriage. The father of 18 has also expressed some regret in moving all of his children away from their community when fleeing Lehi, Utah. But as TLC viewers saw, none of Kody’s unions were healthy. He also alluded to perhaps this is the reason why his children are not following his faith. Kody blames living in Las Vegas but forgets it was his choice to move the family to Sin City.

Kody loved having power over the women, as he often showed by not allowing them to have a say in their lives. When it came to major moves, he was the last and deciding vote- so even if the wives were against something like the move to Arizona, it didn’t matter because Kody always made the final call. The wives also didn’t have their finances until later in life. But perhaps the worst thing the children had to watch growing up was how badly Kody manipulated their feelings. Why would anyone want to juggle multiple spouses after watching Kody fail so miserably?

What Some of the Brown Kids Have Said About Polygamy

Even though Kody doesn’t seem to be close with or take an interest in most of his children, I believe, truthfully, it eats him up that his children have not chosen plural marriage. But the kids have opinions, and many of them have not held back. While speaking to his mother during an episode on Season 18, Paedon Brown shared, “When we first went public, the purpose of going public was to say, ‘Polygamy works.’ I don’t think it works in my family anymore.”

Maddie Brown wanted to join the LDS church but was denied membership because the church didn’t want ties to the Brown family. Garrison Brown left the Apostolic United Brethren (AUB) and joined the LDS church after trying to gain membership for seven years but also had no desire to become a polygamist. Aspyn Brown shared on her wedding episode that she was against the practice, saying, “I don’t want to do plural marriage. I kind of feel bad that none of us want to, but it was just not what we were meant to do, I guess.” And Mykelti Brown shared during a couch confessional, “I’m not going to live polygamy. I don’t think that’s for me. I don’t think I could ever live up to what my parents have been able to do.”

The Brown Kids Double Down

During the recent Sister Wives wedding special, Mykelti once again made it clear that she would never want to share her husband, saying, “Honestly, in Las Vegas is when my opinion about polygamy started to really shift.” The mother of three revealed, “Honestly, I loved having all of my siblings, my mom, my dad, but I don’t think it was fair to my parents,” Mykelti explained. “None of them got what they needed out of a marriage.”

20-year-old Ysabel Brown mimicked her sister’s points, adding, “But I’m really thankful that I grew up in a polygamous household because I love having so many siblings, it’s amazing, and so many moms. It’s really fun, but I don’t think I’d want that for my kids.”

Janelle’s children seem to feel the same way, with Gabe Brown revealing, “I think that polygamy is a beautiful lifestyle for those that desire it, who believe in it and want everything that comes with it.” And Savannah Brown added, “Personally, I don’t think I’d ever be able to make it work.” It looks like none of his 18 children will be joining Kody in the highest level of celestial heaven to worship him as a God for all eternity.
