There is nothing worse than being stuck in a lackluster relationship, especially when you are a Real Housewives star. This time, fans are watching Mia Thornton from the Real Housewives of Potomac. She’s struggling against the current that is her estranged husband, Gordon Thornton. Mia became a cherry blossom during Season 6 after the loss of Monique Samuels. Needless to say, Mia quickly found her place in the drama. Viewers learned she used to be a dancer, which is how she met Gordon, who seemed well off at the time. But their marriage has taken some major dips over the years, and Gordon isn’t playing fairly.
Even though Mia is a polarizing character, her relationship looks anything but healthy from the outside. Fans and cast members alike have questioned whether she had gold-digging tendencies. But I would argue she seemed to be a ride-or-die for Gordon. However, their family business troubles appeared to be the straw that broke the camel’s back. After downsizing their entire life, Mia started to think she should upgrade her man.
Danger, Mia
The latest episode of RHOP had my anxiety all up in a ball after hearing about Mia’s money issues with Gordon. We have seen one too many times a Bravo star being stuck under the thumb of her husband, who controls the money or takes care of all the legal paperwork. We already know it never works out okay.
In what can only be explained as a major, supernova red flag, Mia said when she first tried to divorce Gordo, he drained every single one of her bank accounts. She was a mouse trapped in the maze, and my heart ached for her.
Mia shared, “Truth be told, the first time that I hired a divorce attorney, Gordon emptied my bank account all the way to zero and said I can’t leave him.” For Mia, this was no laughing matter. To viewers, it felt like Gordon was trying to keep a hold of the power dynamic. Mia stated, “No man or female should ever do that to anybody to try to make them stay. That’s abusive. I’ve lived my whole childhood, which I had no control over, was combative. I’m not living a combative life.”
Therapy isn’t working
The couple has been attending some intensive therapy sessions, but all I notice is Gordon trying to gloss over the real issues. This week, the 71-year-old acted as if their relationship was fine and tried to hold tightly onto Mia’s hands. The Bravo star’s body language screamed discomfort as she tried to wiggle her way out of his grasp. In the session, Mia divulged that she almost didn’t marry Gordon because he lacked a romantic side, but she just settled.
Again, this answer seemed to be another red flag regarding their relationship. While Gordon has always seemed to be a decent husband, it very much is starting to feel that Gordon wanted an agreement or an arrangement. He might have wanted the pretty young woman on his arms, and in return, he would fund a certain life. But it seems like Mia is getting a bit tired of her gilded cage.
Goodbye love
In September 2023, Mia announced that after 11 years of marriage, she would be separating from Gordon. The season finale is getting ready to show the rumble between the duo that most likely was the catalyst to their break up. The trailer shows the couple arguing in the kitchen, with Gordon accusing Mia of cheating on him for years, but when Mia whines that his accusations aren’t “fair,” Gordon gets shady, telling his wife, “You want fair go to a carnival.” Needless to say, their lines of communication have officially broken down.
Whether Mia felt trapped or just wanted a change, she had every right to hire a divorce lawyer and start the process. The fact that Gordon felt the need to control her by taking away any assets shows her leaving his is probably the right decision. No one knows what is happening behind closed doors, but as Mia pointed out, no one should be cornered like an animal when trying to leave peacefully.
