Tom Schwartz, mid-Season 11, is still considering what happened to his marriage with Katie Maloney. Perhaps it’s all tied into Tom Sandoval’s disgraceful affair with Rachel Leviss that rocked the entire Vanderpump Rules group, and how he’s trying to mend fences with just about everyone, including the Something About Her co-owner. But did he play a role in the demise of the marriage?
Sandoval’s conflict with Katie was an established phenomenon on the show. Schwartz was often caught in the middle of it all. Opening Schwartz & Sandy’s together only compounded the problem.
During Season 11, Episode 7, Katie and Sandoval had a meaningful conversation about his behavior towards her, especially during the time of divorce. Schwartz was asked to react to his bestie’s interference, and his answer was surprising.
Schwartz blamed the “opening of the bar”
What Sandoval said to Katie during a scene at the house he still shares with Ariana Madix indicates someone who knows he was in the wrong.
“I want to apologize to you for the way I acted last year during your divorce,” he said to Katie. “I know that you were going through a lot and probably didn’t need any of that extra sh-t.”
Yet during the Pump Rules After Show, Schwartz denied Sandoval’s behavior had any influence on his marriage breaking down.
“I don’t put any blame on you for the end of our marriage,” he replied in a clip. “I take full responsibility for my shortcomings. I don’t have anyone to really blame but myself, to be honest.”
Both Toms agree that opening Schwartz & Sandy’s added to their stress. And that translated into more fighting between the formerly married couple.
“It was so f-cking demanding, unrelenting, opening the bar,” Schwartz recalled of the experience. “I became absorbed in that world. I wish I could have done things differently, been there for her more, but man, it just was f-cking insane.”
During Season 10, Episode 2, Katie revealed her frustration with the bar.
“This bar has a very complicated history. It put a massive strain on our relationship. It just was a lot more of a presence in my life than I thought it would be without me having a say over it,” she said at the time.
