Derek Hough and Hayley Erbert have been married less than four months, but they’ve already faced the “sickness and health” portion of their vows. Just a week following Hayley’s emergency brain surgery, Derek shared that he’s feeling relieved about his wife’s progress.
On December 15, Derek posted an Instagram video of the couple walking by the Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C. His wife was wearing a protective helmet following her emergency craniectomy on December 7.
The Dancing with the Stars judge said his professional dancer wife is “doing well.” He added that her recovery “has been nothing short of a miracle.”
Hayley Erbert update: Filled with hope and relief
“The past week has been a challenging journey for us,” Derek captioned the video. “It was a time filled with uncertainty and fear — going from living our dreams onstage to a nightmare in an instant. But today, we are filled with hope and relief as we share with you an update.”
On December 6, Hayley was rushed to the hospital after feeling disoriented following a performance of “A Symphony of Dance.” They had been touring with Derek’s critically acclaimed show taking fans on a “journey through a fusion of dance and music … [The show highlights] dance styles ranging from ballroom and tap to salsa, hip-hop, and everything in between.
The choreographer admitted that his wife “still has a ways to go,” with another surgery in her future. Doctors will “insert a skull implant to replace the piece … removed during the craniectomy,” Derek explained. “It will restore the skull to its natural shape and protect the brain from injury.”
The former DWTS pro thanked fans for the “incredible support,” as well as acknowledging the excellent care of Hayley’s medical team.
“It’s been a profound reminder of how fragile life can be and how quickly things can change,” Derek wrote. “But, it has also shown us the incredible strength and resilience … within us and the power of having a supportive community around us.”
Although their first married Christmas will not be what they’d imagined, they are just “grateful” to still be together. “We look forward to cherishing these moments with a deeper appreciation for life and the people in it,” Derek concluded.
