From the very beginning, Squid Game: The Challenge was plagued as a concept. Where the original show was an effective commentary on late-stage capitalism, the reality TV version became the monster that its predecessor sought to criticize.
Unfortunately for Netflix, Squid Game: The Challenge was more akin to its progenitor than the streaming service ever could’ve hoped for. During shooting, multiple contestants came out with details on the harsh conditions they faced while competing.
Some cast members sustained injuries while others suffered from hypothermia. Now, as the show might be facing a lawsuit or two, new reports have come out surrounding how unequipped producers were to provide for contestants.
Squid Game’s condoms were gone by day two
Trey Plutnicki, also known as Player 301, spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the rumors of condoms being used as chapstick. “I’m going to confirm this: Yeah, that’s 100 percent real,” he said with a laugh, adding, “Do you think I did that? Do I seem like a person that did that? No, hell no. That’s so stupid.”
Trey explained that he gave up before other players attempted to use the contraceptive. “There was lotion, there was conditioner, and those were the first two tries. And after I tried those and they weren’t working, I was like, ‘Well, that’s all of our options, because obviously we’re not going to use the condoms.’”
Unfortunately, Trey was incorrect. “Within a day, maybe a day and a half, all the condoms were gone. It was absurd. And it still didn’t work!” Producers did eventually give contestants individual lip balm containers. Trey ended up giving his away. Netflix had better hope the show is worth the PR nightmares it’s caused.
