Mary urges Monica to make peace

I realize that Mary is only a “friend of” the Housewives this season, but is she contracted to make one appearance per episode? Monica arrives at the front door, and the pastor invites her in. Monica is amazed at the sheer opulence of Mary’s house. Go check out the Dr. Suess chairs, Monica! Those are amazing.

As they bond over what looks like carrot cake (yum!), Mary admits that she’s been keeping herself to herself for her own sanity. She’s tired of fighting with these bitches, so she’d rather just stay home.

“I get it, that’s where I’m at,” Monica tells her.

“Losing your mind?” Mary asks. “Don’t ever lose your mind over no one. Ever.” Good advice there, Mare.

When the mom of four tells Mary that Lisa was just “relentless” at Heather’s event, Mary points out that Monica dishes out as good as she gets. Even though Monica says Lisa gets “nasty,” Mary says she should just let it go.

Can I just say here that Monica does a dead-on impression of Lisa? She has her nailed with her fake, breathy voice, “Oh, my God, Mary, how many carats? Is that Chanel? I love that! I love that!” Mary almost falls out of her chair laughing.

Mary wisely advises Monica to just take Lisa as she is and not hold a grudge. She encourages Monica to just apologize “and really mean it.” Life is too short.

Jack needs space

Lisa, John and their son Jack are visiting the “Modern Missionary Menswear” store. For real. Only in Utah. They’re shopping for the clothing Jack will need while he’s away on his two-year mission. His shopping list says he needs “conservative” suits, slacks, white shirts and ties, blue or black preferred. But Lisa keeps picking up teal and maroon plaid jackets. She wants Jack to look “fashionable” while he’s out proselytizing.

“I should have came [sic] with just Dad,” Jack laughs. As Lisa gushes over how cute he looks in his missionary outfit, Jack adds, “I think you need this separation more than I do … You’re a lot … I love you so much, but I need the space.”

Jack thinks it’s just time for him to “leave the nest.” Talking about not having her son home for the holidays for two years makes Lisa teary.

“I’m gonna start crying in public,” Lisa says, adding, “You love me,” as Jack pulls her in for a hug. Lisa reminisces about Jack being a little boy and loving his mommy so much. Okay, I have a son Jack’s age (also named Jack), and he does not like me talking about that stuff. It’s embarrassing. I can see why Lisa’s Jack can’t wait to get away.

“Here’s a bet,” John continues. “What’s the over/under on how long till your mom stops crying after you leave? I’d say a week.”

“Up until I come home,” Jack replies, and Lisa agrees.

Meredith’s jewelry launch

Meredith is having a big launch party for her new “Plated by Meredith Marks” jewelry line. Whitney is among the first to arrive. Meredith notices that something’s off with her and asks, “Are you all right?”

Shaking her head, Whitney tells her that her friend Shari lost her battle with cancer yesterday. Whitney’s never lost anybody that close to her, and it’s hitting her hard.

“Oh, honey,” Meredith whispers and takes Whitney in her arms. Surprisingly, Meredith’s compassion in this moment got me in the feels, and I also teared up for a minute.

Whitney didn’t want to put a damper on Meredith’s event, but she wanted to be here to show her support. She brought a purseful of tissues to get her through the day and offers one to Meredith. “I can’t ruin your event,” so suck it up, Mere. It meant a lot to Meredith that Whitney came, even though she was grieving her friend.

The rest of her friends rally around and show their sympathy for Whitney’s loss. Except for Lisa, who seems to ignore her. “For her to act like I’m not even existing right now, it’s hurtful,” Whitney says. More on that later.

Monica and Lisa bury the hatchet (for now)

When Whitney leaves Monica and Lisa looking over Meredith’s jewelry, Monica says, “Lisa, I want to tell you something, and this is genuine. When we had our first lunch together, I really felt excited to have a relationship with you and be able to bond.” But they got off track afterward and things got ugly. Monica admits that she fights dirty and says things she really doesn’t mean.

“I respect you,” Monica tells her. “You do a lot of things that I admire. You’re an amazing mom.”

“You’re really good at apologizing,” Lisa laughs. In an interview, she basically says, “Tell me more.”

“You’ve gone through trauma, from what I understand,” says Lisa. Then why did she attack her and call her a “nasty person” at Heather’s Founders Day event? That was pretty mean, too.

“I need to learn a different way [to communicate], ’cause that’s how I was raised,” Monica finishes. She’s deeply sorry.

“We’re fine,” Lisa says. Wow. That was easy. We’ll see how long it lasts, though.

Gifts from Monica

As Monica prepares to present her gifts to the ladies, Lisa says, “Today’s a hard day for Whitney. She just lost her friend. I don’t know if I should talk to her or not talk to her. I don’t know.” She’s afraid to upset her, but it would have been so much better if Lisa had just given Whitney a hug. Hold that thought.

When all the women (except Angie, who is inexplicably absent) have gathered, Monica begins. “I just wanted to give you guys some Bermuda rum … and these are malassadas,” she says, opening a pink bakery box. “Portuguese pastries.”

“I really am excited about Bermuda,” Monica continues. “My family is from there, and I [still] have family there now. It’s very special to me.” She’s excited that they’re going, especially since she’s never been there before. “Cheers to Bermuda, bitches!”

“Good job,” Heather tells her. “Bounce back, girl! You did it!”

Whitney loses her sh*t on Lisa

Finally, Lisa approaches Whitney. “Are you okay?”

“No,” Whitney snaps. “It hurt when you walk up and go right past me and go straight to Heather … And then you look at me and you’re like, ‘Are you okay?’ … No, I’m not. I need you to hug me, and I need you to acknowledge that I lost my best friend.”

By this time Whitney’s so worked up, there’s no coming back. It’s actually common for grief to manifest as anger that gets misdirected at people who are just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Making matters worse, Lisa’s just not very good at explaining herself. She tells Whitney, “I can’t always keep a mental calculator of everything going on for everyone at all times.”

Oh, Lisa. That makes it sound like you forgot Whitney’s best friend died yesterday.

“We’re in public,” Lisa says in a confessional. “I don’t know how fragile she is. For me, I plug through things, I want to be quiet about it, so I did not want to say anything that could upset her … I don’t know how Whitney handles grief.”

Lisa tells her, “I have flowers on the way to your house.”

“I don’t care about flowers,” Whitney responds. “I want you … Everything’s about you. I’m always there for you, and I just need you for one minute to be there for me.”

Whitney storms out, and Lisa has another hot mic moment while the crew tries to get her mic pack off. Poor long-suffering John walks into the room and stoically asks, “What now?”

The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City airs Wednesdays at 8/7c on Bravo.
