Brittish Williams isn’t going down without a fight! Just a couple of weeks after the Basketball Wives star was sentenced to a four-year prison sentence, she and her lawyers have already filed for an appeal.
Brittish plead guilty to 15 felony fraud charges: three counts of making false statements to the IRS, five counts of Social Security number misuse, four counts of bank fraud, and three counts of wire fraud. From fraudulent pandemic loans to falsely claiming her relatives as dependents, Brittish went above and beyond with her financial schemes. They were hoping she’d get a slap on the wrist from the judge, but that wasn’t the case.
Now, according to Radar Online, Brittish and her lawyer believe she was treated unfairly because of her celebrity status. It’s a mess, and they want an appellate court to intervene.
Too famous for fraud
Immediately after Brittish received her sentencing, her lawyer, Beau Brindley started making claims that his client was unfairly treated because of her celebrity status.
“Brittish Williams was punished today, not for fraud, but for her celebrity,” the lawyer claimed. “The Court chose to treat her more harshly due to her status as a public figure rather than treating similarly situated defendants equally.”
In addition to a four-year prison sentence, Brittish has to pay $564,069 in restitution. She’ll also be on supervised release for five years once she gets out of jail. However, her lawyer argued that this punishment was way too harsh. They’re hoping that an appellate court can review the lower court’s sentencing to ensure proper guidelines were followed.
Her lawyer said, “Ms. Williams’ success is not a crime subject to enhanced penalty. And we will challenge this sentence through every legal means available.”
Basketball Wives airs on VH1, Mondays at 9/8c.
