Have you been following the drama over at So You Think You Could Dance? If not, you probably should, because this is the most interesting the show has been in years. The show had been on hiatus since 2019, and it just relaunched for its 17th season with an all-new, all-star lineup of judges: Matthew Morrison, JoJo Siwa, and Stephen “tWitch” Boss. But now, just barely a week after the season premiered, one of those judges just got the ax for breaking some fundamental rules.
People reported that Matthew Morrison was leaving So You Think You Can Dance, despite having just made his debut on the show. He announced the news in a carefully worded statement.
“Having the opportunity to be a judge on So You Think You Can Dance was an incredible honor for me. Therefore, it is my deepest regret to inform you that I will be leaving the show,” Matthew said in the statement.
“After filming the audition rounds for the show and completing the selection of the 12 finalists, I did not follow competition production protocols, preventing me from being able to judge the competition fairly,” he continued. “I cannot apologize enough to all involved and I will be watching alongside you all on what I know will be one of the best seasons yet.”
Not following “competition production protocols” is such an extremely vague statement. Plus, the fact that they released this juicy little tidbit on the Friday before a 3-day holiday weekend is a classic PR move to get people to forget. However, the holiday is over, and we didn’t forget. The truth is coming out about why Matthew got fired from his new gig.
According to a source close to the show, Matthew was fired because he had an inappropriate relationship with a female contestant. The source revealed, “They didn’t have sex, but he reached out to her through flirty direct messages on social media.”
Allegedly, the contestant felt uncomfortable with Matthew’s comments, so she went to the producers. The producers got Fox involved, and then the network fired him after completing their own investigation. So, yeah, it sounds like “competition production protocols” were definitely not followed. And let’s not even get into the fact that he’s a married man with kids.
But, what does his sudden firing mean for season 17 of So You Think You Can Dance? This was supposed to be the show’s triumphant return after thee years off the air, but Matthew’s inappropriate behavior has left the show scrambling to find a third judge. Perhaps they can bring in one of the OG judges that they replaced? Either way, the first part of the new So You Think You Can Dance season was pretaped, so we’ll still see Matthew on the judge’s panel for the next few weeks during the audition rounds. But when the real part of the competition heats up later this summer, someone new will be in his seat.
