If you had a little bit too much to drink on New Year’s Eve, and you’re still feeling regretful about some of your decisions, try to look on the bright side. At least your drunken shenanigans weren’t broadcast live on CNN. Unfortunately, Andy Cohen can’t say the same.
Andy and his pal Anderson Cooper have delivered lighthearted coverage and celebrity interviews for CNN’s New Year’s Eve Live for the past five years. But this year, Andy really seemed to enjoy himself more than ever before. Even if you didn’t tune into the live broadcast, you’ve probably seen the clips by now. From blasting former New York City mayor Bill De Blasio to making Anderson Cooper giggle his way into 2022, Andy undoubtedly brought the chaotic Real Housewives energy to CNN this year. But, despite all of the viral videos and memes that the wild night produced, Andy does have one regret — and that’s a dig he made about Ryan Seacrest and the legendary Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve.
During Andy and Anderson’s broadcast, Journey performed for Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve on an adjacent stage. As smoke from the Journey performance started billowing into Andy and Anderson’s shot, Andy remarked that it was because of “Ryan Seacrest’s group of losers that are performing behind us.” And then he continued, “I mean, with all due [respect], if you’ve been watching ABC tonight, you’ve seen nothing. I’m sorry.”
He’s not totally wrong. The performances this year were a bit bland. However, any seasoned couch potato knows that when it comes to New Year’s Eve specials, the trick is to flip between all of them over and over again. That way, you’re guaranteed to see something exciting or absurd all throughout the night.

Whether his observation about this year’s ABC broadcast was truthful or not, Andy said on the January 3rd episode of his SiriusXM show, Andy Cohen Live, that he regrets making the jab. Now that his body has completely processed all of the tequila, he realizes that throwing shade at his peer wasn’t very friendly.
He explained, “The only thing that I regret saying, the only thing is that I slammed the ABC broadcast and I really like Ryan Seacrest, and he’s a great guy,” He continued, “And I really regret saying that, and I was just stupid and drunk and feeling it.”
Andy’s apology is taken straight from an episode of The Real Housewives. Say you regret it, blame the alcohol, and then move on. But although Andy regrets making the shady comment, he does believe that the internet is blowing the story out of proportion. He told his Radio Andy listeners, “The headlines about Ryan Seacrest are all like I trash Ryan Seacrest.” He continued, “I’m like, I really, I hope he hears the clip. You know what I mean?”

And for those of you wondering if Andy’s headline-making New Year’s Eve crossed a line for CNN, it looks like they’re standing behind him. Taking a picture with a fake severed head of the president is where they draw the line. Throwing a little shade and getting a bit too friendly with your cocktails is okay for a New Year’s Eve broadcast. In a statement to E! News, CNN said, “Andy said something he shouldn’t have on live tv. We’ve addressed it with him and look forward to having him back again next year.”
