Real Housewives of New Jersey is one of the most authentic series in the franchise. For a long time, it was actually hard for me to watch because of the family drama. While a lot of the Housewives shows are based on contracts friendships (using that word loosely), RHONJ has always been more family-oriented. Much like the drama between Kim Richards and Kyle Richards – the fights between Teresa Giudice, Joe Giudice, Joe Gorga and Melissa Gorga have been super dark and real. I still can’t watch the Christening episode from Season 1 or the cast trip to the “healing” retreat in Season 5.
This shows RHONJ has done a pretty good job of keeping it real. That is until we consider Melissa’s individual storylines. There was that one time she believed she had a long-lost-sister. Then there was that time she froze her eggs for a potential fourth child. Now on this season, Melissa and Joe are having marital issues and people are starting to question if the story is real.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Melissa addresses “the commentary that she’s just faking it for TV.” On her marital issues this season she says, “it’s so real. Bravo’s not down with that. You start doing any of that, you’re gone. They are not down with that.” According to ET, anyone “who calls her authenticity into question isn’t looking at the big picture. This isn’t a woman doing things for storylines, it’s a woman coming into her own by exploring different parts of her life.” Sure.
“I was only married for four years before I had been on TV,” Melissa says. “I don’t think anyone understands, almost my whole married life I am on reality TV.” This somehow means she’s more authentic. Then the conversation turns to Jennifer Aydin. “The funny thing is, like, that crazy Jennifer… She’ll say, ‘Oh, fake this and this.’ No. It’s actually really real. And I don’t even want this [marital trouble] to be real. And it is.”

Melissa insists her marital issues this season are very real and that instead, it’s Jennifer who isn’t being authentic. “She never has anything… she just goes for, let me talk about Melissa so maybe people see my name talking about Melissa. She needs to get a grip. She’s such a wannabe. I can’t with her. Sorry but like, come on. I can’t.” I also can’t with Jennifer, so I feel her on this.
She then points out inconsistencies in Jennifer’s behavior. “First of all — I’ll never forget, [Jennifer] goes from the first season, like, ‘Oh my god, I don’t drink. I don’t drink.’ You’re laying on the floor bombed like you’re in a sorority! Come on, it’s ridiculous.” Yes, that was ridiculous, but I don’t doubt Jennifer and Bill Aydin can’t hold their liquor.

“You want to talk about ridiculous?” Melissa asks. “[Jennifer] will do anything for attention. And that doesn’t work. I like authentic people.” So, Melissa thinks Jennifer’s not authentic and Jennifer thinks Melissa’s not authentic. Maybe they’re both being inauthentic!
