Coronavirus is hitting the world pretty hard. We’ve all been cooped up in quarantine for what feels like forever. While Bravo is doing us a great service by running marathons of various past seasons, it’s not always enough. But we are all in this together, including our favorite Bravolebrities.
It’s reassuring to hear that so many of them are doing their part to make the world a better place right now. Bethenny Frankel is at the top of my list after donating thousands of medical supplies to hospitals in need. Dolores Catania has done similar work, organizing food, medical supplies and even shoes for local healthcare workers. Tom Sandoval and Tom Schwartz raised money to help their TomTom staff get paid while they are out of work. Tinsley Mortimer and fiance Scott Kluth did something super sweet and donated $10K each to the family of a Bravo editor who passed from the virus. Hell, even Teddi Mellencamp hooked us all up and gave away free workouts so everyone can stay healthy while cooped up. But not all of our Bravolebrities have left us feeling good during the pandemic.
Real Housewives of Orange County cast member Kelly Dodd has long been controversial. But her latest dust up really takes the cake. Page Six reports that Kelly took to Instagram to give her thoughts on the coronavirus outbreak. It all started when she posted a picture of herself on a plane coming back to California from New York, where she was spending time with fiance, Rick Leventhal. After fans started to criticize her for non-essential travel, Kelly doubled down in her response. She wrote, “If it’s dangerous why are the airlines still flying? You think I want to fly? I had to get back, how is that elitist?”
Kelly continued with her ill-conceived statements. She wrote, “Do you know how many people died from the H1N1, the swine flu or SARS? It’s 25% get your facts straight you only hearing numbers not the reality! It’s God’s way of thinning the herd!” Oof. I have no idea what has possessed Kelly to say something so stupid but understandably, social media was pissed. She tried to come back down to earth by adding, “If you are vulnerable or compromised stay inside; if you don’t, protect others by wearing masks and gloves keep your distance! And don’t go out if you are ill!” Despite the common sense factor of this, the damage was done and she deleted her comments.

Kelly also decided it would be prudent to deliver an apology. As reported by People, Kelly took to her Instagram stories. She shared, “I want to give a public apology.” Kelly continued, “When I wrote that it’s ‘God’s way of thinning the herd’ that’s not what I meant. What I meant was, do these pandemics happen because it’s God’s way? I’m not God, I’m not insensitive, I feel bad for all the families that lost loved ones and I do think we should all stay home and protect everybody. That’s not what I meant and I want to apologize to anyone that got offended, okay? I’m sorry.”
Kelly added, “So for anybody who felt offended by my stupid writing of God thinning the herd, I don’t — I’m just asking a question. Is it it God’s way of thinning the herd? I don’t know. I just feel bad and my choice of words were stupid and I hope you guys can all forgive me for saying something so ridiculous and so stupid. So again, please accept my apology, and I feel bad for everybody out there that has lost loved ones, and I hope everybody’s safe and protects themselves from this pandemic.”

I would love to know what was going through Kelly’s head when she said all this. Is there anything even in that head of hers? On top of that, the apology doesn’t seem particularly sincere. As much as I would like to give people the benefit of the doubt, this is a tough one. Apology or not, I don’t think anyone is going to forgive or forget this anytime soon.
