Compared to other iterations of the franchise, the first season of Below Deck Sailing Yacht has been relatively smooth sailing so far. Chef Adam Glick has garnered consistent praise Captain Glenn Shephard. All the charter guests have left with a smile on their face. Love is even in the air! At least for now.
From the first episode, we saw chief stew Jenna MacGillivray and Adam hit it off. What started off as friendly flirting quickly became one of the biggest storylines of the season. Some of the staff, namely Madison Stalker, are finding their relationship unprofessional as things heat up.
In an interview with Heavy, Jenna insists her relationship didn’t conflict with her work. “The moments when I’m kissing Adam… I’m really shy about PDA. No one was around for those scenes,” she said. “So if he happens to grab me and give me a kiss on the cheek, no one was around or might walk passed.” No one may have been around per se, but the furthest person was probably less than 6 feet away.
It’s not kissing that has walked the line of unprofessionalism as much as innuendos and flirting have. In the interview, Jenna continues to advocate for herself. “I work my ass off. You can ask anyone on the crew about that and I think the only person who might have a different opinion would be Madison,” she said.

But it doesn’t seem like Madison is the only one who thought Jenna and Adam’s relationship lacked professional etiquette. She opened up to Heavy about been receiving backlash online, on her perceived lazy, bossy attitude and relationship with Adam.
“People don’t seem to be happy with whatever I’m doing. A lot of that is focused on this relationship with Adam,” she said. “Keep in mind, the show would be really boring if there wasn’t those type of dynamics going on.” That is something we can all agree upon.

Personally, I don’t mind their relationship. It’s clear all the charter guests have been happy so far, so her job is done. The resulting tension between Jenna and Madison provides really good entertainment though, giving it the ole “can’t look away” reality tv effect.
Jenna expressed to Heavy that finding a balance between a personal and professional life on a sailing boat isn’t easy. “Your workplace is your home,” Jenna said. “So those lines get crossed sometimes.”

When asked about Captain Glenn’s thoughts on their relationship, Jenna said, “He was pretty open. I think at some point it might have come up or he might have said as long as it doesn’t interfere with work I don’t really care.” At least her boss is on her side.
Jenna reflected back on her experiences in the interview, “Would I be as publicly affectionate in the future? No. I would definitely change that because that’s not really my style,” she said. “There was nowhere to go that someone wasn’t reaming me out about.”
