The drama between Kate Chastain and Ashton Pienaar on Below Deck is pretty tense. He’s jammed his tongue down her throat without permission. He called her out for taking her sweet time to get read for group outings. And the preview for next week’s episode looks even worse for the two of them. Kate and chef Kevin Dobson have been at odds since the very start. Even Tanner Sterback has thrown in some jabs at Kate, which isn’t surprising because he becomes less and less endearing each episode.
Kate also got into it with Brian de Saint Pern in the production van over the word “yachtie,” but that seemed very out of the norm for the typically respectful deckhand. However, he did cross a line (in many people’s eyes), when he called Kate “kind of a bitch.” So what does Captain Lee Rosbach have to say about this? He’s Team Kate, of course, but he didn’t hear about most of this stuff until he watched the episodes.
During a recent Watch What Happens Live episode, a caller asked Kate and Rhylee Gerber, “I’ve spent twenty years in the navy and never have I seen what I’ve seen on Below Deck. This question is for Rhylee and Kate. Do they feel like the young men on deck exhibit sexist or misogynistic behavior? If they do, why don’t they think Captain Lee should intervene?”
Kate began, “Yes, I think you’re exactly right” in regard to the sexist behavior.

Then she elaborated, “The reason I didn’t go to Captain Lee is because a lot of times people say that I get preferential treatment from Captain Lee.” This was a nod to Rhylee’s quote from last night’s episode, which was kind of awkward with Rhylee sitting right there. However, Rhylee and Kate seem to be on the same page when it comes to how they feel about their fellow crew members.
Kate continued, “I think it’s called tenure, but I didn’t want to put Captain Lee in a place where he was gonna get accused of giving me preferential treatment. I was just gonna handle it myself.” He does give her preferential treatment, but they do have about five years of experience working together. Oh, and unlike a lot of the crew members, Kate is not lazy and she’s very good at her job.

Does the captain have blinders when it comes to Kate? I would say so, but usually Kate’s opinions are (usually) pretty rational. Well, minus taking way too long to put on a bathing suit and justifying that by citing her rank within the crew. That’s just absurd. However, Kevin is rude as hell and incredibly condescending. I so get why Kate is over his antics. Ashton’s Smashton alter ego has gone way too far, so, again, Kate I feel you there. None of us like Tanner at this point, so we are all in agreement with Kate on that one. So, let’s just hope the Brian drama was a one-time inscident. We need at least one nice guy on this point, aside from Captain Lee.
