Kate & Captain Lee Below Deck

Below Deck Stars Captain Lee Rosbach And Kate Chastain Reveal Their Ideal Moment To Fire A Crew Member

Captain Lee Rosbach and Chief Stew Kate Chastain are the power duo of Below Deck.  They’ve been working together since Season 2 and have a well-established rapport both personally and professionally.  Their leadership onboard makes for the perfect balance of fun and personal responsibility.  If you don’t pull your weight, you’re off the boat.  Captain Lee is not one to give hugs and hang on to inefficient crew members.

We’ve seen it happen many times.  Captain Lee will call someone to the bridge and a white envelope gets handed over.  Then the newly unemployed crew member will share their hopes, dreams, and resentments in their exit interview.  But what about Captain Lee?  He makes some big decision and we don’t often know what his rationale is when he finally lets someone go.

Captain Lee and Kate spoke to Bravo’s The Daily Dish Podcast this week concerning his method for terminating employees.  For Captain Lee, it’s an instinctive and clear decision.  He said, “for me it happens really quick.  You know, it’s like somebody flips a light switch.  I’ve had enough.  It’s time to go.”

Kate also revealed that Captain Lee has particular timing to go about a turnover.  She said, “usually, I think, usually we wait until, like, after the charter’s over, because if you let them know, like, mid-charter, we’re out at sea, like, you want to wait ’til you’re at the dock and they can pack their stuff.”

Makes sense.  And that certainly goes both ways.  No one wants to quite mid-charter and lose the tip money.

Captain Lee agreed,  “if you can.  Sometimes, I know it and I’ll put off letting them know that I know it, until we, you know, like you said, get back to the dock.”

It’s interesting that this came up during the podcast.  No one has been fired yet this season but there are some potentials.  Abbi Murphy for one.  She has been having trouble conforming to yacht life and has let her attitude get in the way of her productivity.  Chef Kevin Dobson is making enemies in all departments and is making mistakes in his meal planning and provisioning.  Are Captain Lee and Kate foreshadowing an upcoming turnover?
