Gina Kirschenheiter Defends Ex-Husband Matt Kirschenheiter Amid Ongoing Divorce, Says He Is “Not A Monster”

Everyone makes mistakes, right? Who are we as a society if we do not acknowledge mistakes and move forward with positive intentions? Gina Kirschenheiter has learned a hard lesson about bad decisions. On the current season of Real Housewives of Orange County, Gina has definitely had her share of issues. Not only does she have to deal with people like Vicki Gunvalson passing judgement on her lifestyle, she has also had to navigate the fallout from her own poor choices.

Gina’s marriage to Matt Kirschenheiter began to dissolve roughly when she signed up for RHOC. She even admitted filming the show did not soothe the rollercoaster of emotions and suspected infidelity the couple experienced. In a horrible turn of events, Gina and Matt’s pleasant co-existence was shattered when he allegedly assaulted her over the summer. Since that time, we have seen tears, accusations, and numerous court appearances. Now that the dust has settled, Gina wants people to know, her ex isn’t such a bad guy after all.

In June 2019, Gina and Matt’s relationship took an incredibly dark turn. After a night on the town, Gina was surprised by a seemingly drunk Matt banging on her door. According to reports, Matt supposedly threatened to kill Gina and then proceeded to ALLEGEDLY physically assault her.

Matt was ultimately arrested and Gina filed a restraining order after the vicious attack. Matt found himself gifted with two felony counts related to this incident. He also found himself fighting for custody of his children. Now, after claiming Matt might have a problem with drugs and/or alcohol, and cheating – Gina says, everyone makes mistakes.

In an interview with People, Gina shared the compassion she has developed for her former spouse. She said, “There is a part of my heart that feels bad for Matt because he wasn’t really a part of this to begin with and he’s not a monster.” Just out of curiosity, if being charged with inflicting corporal punishment on someone doesn’t make you a monster, what does? Gina explained, “It’s an emotional time, and people make mistakes. He’s made a lot of them, obviously.”

Gina has made mistakes too. After a DUI arrest in January, and subsequently receiving other traffic violations, Gina knows personal errors are a part of life. Having too much to drink and then getting behind the wheel of a car is a perfect example. Maybe learning her own lessons the hard way opened the door to forgiveness. She wants RHOC fans to know that Matt is an okay guy, despite the whole domestic violence thing.

How did Gina achieve this enlightened take on her ex? By cutting him off not communicating with him directly. She stated, “We communicate through a website, but it’s good for us,” she said. Actually, this isn’t a bad idea at all. I might be able to tolerate a relationship if interactions were done via a website. Gina continued, “It’s actually helping us to stay in bounds and have a healthy relationship moving forward. I’m hopeful that in the future, things will get better and it won’t always be like this.”

While it may seem a cold and impersonal way to co-parent, it’s better than constant fighting and defamation. Gina admitted it can make parenting “tougher”, but “Matt and I being away from each other is the best thing for our children.” Well go figure, parents doing the right thing for the sake of their children. WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE?

Gina and Matt are now taking one counseling co-parenting class per month together. And Gina maintains the children are not the focus of their troubles. “There is actually no custody battle, there really is not,” she revealed. “Even with things going on with Matt, as they are now, he actually has more custody than he’s ever had because he’s not employed anymore, so he’s around.” Cheers for that subtle burn, honey. The former couple are due back in court on October 10 to discuss the terms of their on-going divorce. Stay tuned.
