Can you believe that the season finale of Southern Charm is next week? With the absence of Thomas Ravenel, the show has not been as dramatic as in the past. However, one cast member’s ugly accusation turned the show upside down a few weeks ago. Austen Kroll’s sometime girlfriend Madison Lecroy accused Shep Rose of giving Danni Baird chlamydia.
The season-long animosity between Shep and Madison escalated at the end of the cast Colorado trip in a dangerous game of one-upmanship between the two. Poor Danni was the collateral damage in their dispute. To me, the accusation is one of the all-time most uncomfortable reality television moments. Apparently, some of the Southern Charm cast feels the same way.
In a video from the Southern Charm Aftershow, cast members shared their thoughts about Madison’s accusation. Austen blames part of the STD debacle on Shep. He states, “My understanding of it all, you know, Shep was goading her. Like, ‘Come on, come on, I dare you. I’ll argue you all day, little girl.’ ”
Cameran Eubanks agrees with Austen, admitting, “And Shep does do that.” Backing up Cameran’s point, Austen said, “He can belittle you. He…he…he…prides himself in making you feel, as he always says, ‘This small.’ ” Shep loves to use words to needle people and it has sometimes resulted in resentment from his co-stars. For his part, Shep believes that Madison is a pot-stirrer, declaring, “There always has to be an enemy with her–and them [Madison and Austen].”
Agreeing with Shep, Craig Conover states, “It was an attack. Instead of like discussing what was going on, you [Madison] attacked with something just so not related. She was throwing her boyfriend under the bus. She was throwing everyone under the bus.”
Madison claimed that she heard the chlamydia story from Austen. In revealing the information, she also threw Austen into the mix, then drove the bus over a shocked Danni.

How does Danni, the one who was really harmed in this mess, feel about Madison? Danni shared, “She operates out of spite and I think any way that she can pull somebody else in it at that time or if she thinks she has ammunition and it may include an innocent victim, she’ll say it. She doesn’t care if it’s true.”
Did Madison consider Danni expendable to get back at Shep? Or was she doing a two-for one hit as Danni had revealed earlier in the season that Madison had been messaging the man she was dating on social media? That information contributed to Austen and Madison breaking up.

Austen believes that Madison defending herself was what led to the chlamydia accusation. Supporting Madison, he says, “When someone is backed into a corner, when a fighter is backed into a corner, they…they…they bring out everything in their arsenal.” Unfortunately, Madison’s arsenal included private medical information that should never have been shared, true or not.
Of course, Austen has some accountability in this mess, if he really told Madison the information about Shep and Danni. Shep says about Madison, “She’s said some really harmful, awful things and said that Austen…and said that Austen told her them.” It does seem likely that Madison got this information from Austen and he did not deny it at the time.

Danni is the one that that was really hurt by Madison’s accusation. She explains, “Once you say something, like it’s out there and you can regret it, but it doesn’t change, like, the behavior and how people perceive you at that point.” Very true. No matter what you do to close the door, the accusation about chlamydia will always be there.
Interestingly, Shep plays coy with the bottom line in chlamydia-gate. He claims, ‘I don’t know the truth. I know that it wasn’t truthful.” You would think you would know if you gave someone chlamydia! Although, this is Shep we are talking about–maybe he just doesn’t remember all the details. Shep also doesn’t reveal if he actually told Austen the information that started this whole mess.

It will be interesting to see how this matter is addressed at the reunion. I am hopeful Danni gets an apology and the matter goes the way of many reality show storylines–soon forgotten when other drama comes up.
