Fans have watched Captain Sandy Yawn navigate through the rough seas of boat flings with her crew on Below Deck Mediterranean. It was not the epitome of courtship when Hannah Ferrier whined about cigs to Conrad Empson. The same applies to Malia White and her non-Harlequin romance with onion lover Chef Adam Glick and/or the deck crew. Being crammed together like sardines on a yacht often leads to the occasional dalliance, but is rarely a long-lasting event.
But what about the Captain? Extensive traveling and time away from her home base has proven to be a challenge in Sandy’s own personal life. She has previously discussed the difficulty of maintaining a relationship whilst being in a career where you aren’t just in separate time zones, you can be clear across the world. Well, you can start humming The Love Boat theme song along with me, because things have changed.
Y’all must pardon me a minute while I remove my cloak of snark. Captain Sandy might have found “the one.” Sandy is currently dating gospel singer, Leah Shafer. The two met through Facebook, where some relationships sink like the Titanic. Bravo’s The Daily Dish has the details.
“She sent me a nice message that said, ‘I came across your show, congratulations, many blessings,’” Sandy shared. The “many blessings” part of the note stood out to Sandy and perked her interest.
After some time, they met up this past November in Los Angeles. Both of them claim it was “love at first sight”. Leah explained, “It just happened, when you meet another soul that you connect with at such a deep level, it is unexplainable and beautiful.”

The two had many common interests and bonded over their love of music and more. Leah’s singing career certainly didn’t hurt that aspect. “And then, of course, the attraction and falling in love with a beautiful soul and knowing you want to be with someone forever,” Leah recalled. Far be it from me to have positive emotions, but that is incredibly sweet.
While the lovebirds are floating on Cloud 9, it hasn’t been completely smooth sailing (you’re welcome). Leah admits some religious institutions have “turned their back on her” since the relationship went public.

In May 2018, Captain Sandy described her idea (ship) mate to The Daily Dish. “I just want someone who wakes up happy, just happy to be alive. Like, that’s how I wake up every day of my life.” Sandy continued, “But the majority of the time, someone who wants to live, wants to experience, wants to travel, wants to try different restaurants, wants to go see shows. And I love music. Someone who loves concerts because I am a concertgoer.”
It certainly sounds like Sandy’s wish finally came true. She has recently relocated from Los Angeles to Denver, Colorado to be closer to her new lady. Welcome aboard, Leah! Don’t forget, the new season of Below Deck Mediterranean sails back into port (sorry) on June 3!
