Caroline Bedol Quits

Caroline Bedol Experienced Suicidal Thoughts After Leaving Below Deck

There are reality TV moments that are so outrageous and excessive that it unites fans in their disbelief.  Caroline Bedol’s departure from Below Deck last season was one of those moments.  It wasn’t Caroline quitting her Third Stew position that was shocking, but the manner in which she was treated by her superiors before she left.  Chief Stew Kate Chastain and Second Stew Josiah Carter hooked up a speaker outside Caroline’s door to blast “eviction music.”

Crewmate Ross Inia put a stop to it and questioned Kate’s bullying tactics.  Fans of the show agreed.  Even Captain Lee Rosbach had a similar reaction.  A question of ethics also came up.  Should audition screening be more thorough to make sure no one is put into a high-pressure situation that they may not be able to handle?

Caroline found the experience so traumatizing that she had difficulty processing it.  The former Third Stew revealed to RadarOnline that she started having suicidal thoughts from the time she quit until “halfway through the airing of the season.”  Presumably, that would coincide with the time she was on the show.

She described how she felt when she returned home.  Caroline said, “I was fighting alone.  Once I got back I was really depressed.  I was struggling.  I was saying, ‘every episode, I feel like I am dying.'”

Despite her feelings, Caroline never had any intention to self-harm.  Though a disturbing tweet she posted in January had friends fearing for her life.  A welfare check was conducted at her home.

Caroline revealed that she never heard from any of her cast mates.  But she certainly has a lot to say about her former boss.  Caroline labeled Kate as a “textbook psychopath.”  She elaborated, “I don’t use the word [psychopath] flippantly.  It’s a personality disorder.  These people display patterns and that’s why we study them.”

Despite the negatives, Caroline says she had some positive experiences from being on the show.  She described a new-found confidence that she “did not have in the beginning.”  Caroline also is valuing her health and putting herself first now.

Caroline has made connections with supportive people on social media.  “The positive that’s come from the show is something that I’ve never had before and that’s a platform to reach people,” she said, “I’ve received so many messages saying ‘I relate to you, I have depression,’ It’s humbling.”
