How did we ever survive before social media? The opportunities to share your life with the world are endless. You can tout your children’s accomplishments, post photos of beautiful sunsets and reveal every morsel you eat at an expensive dinner in seconds.
For the most part, I think social media is a great connector of humanity. However, there are some people who should think twice before hitting the “post” button. Especially impulsive people who don’t think about the consequences of their actions. Who maybe have a big mouth. And love to be the center of attention. And think they are hilarious. You know, someone like Lisa Rinna. Now, the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star has gotten herself into some hot water over an ill-advised social media post that is culturally insensitive, to say the least.
Like many people, Lisa thought about Lent this week. Unlike most of us, she was amused by one of the practices of Lent. In an Instagram post shared by bravo_snark taken from Lisa’s Instagram Story, she manages to embarrass herself in a way she never has before. By mocking the religious practices of others.
Lisa was watching CNN anchor Chris Cuomo interviewing two guests on Ash Wednesday and decided the interview was Instagram worthy. In her video post, she pans to her television and begins commenting as Chris and both of the guests have ash marks on their foreheads. Lisa then moves to the female guest and says, “She gets the mazel of the day. She’s got her Lent ash on her forehead. I’m (sic) dig it. Mazel of the day for you! Rinna mazel!”
Mazel tov means good fortune in Hebrew. So, Lisa has managed to mock Christians with a Jewish expression of great import to Judaism. A new low, even for her.
Why would Lisa find an ash cross on a forehead so funny? Anyone who has been out in public on Ash Wednesday sees many people observing the holy day with a cross on their forehead. And they think nothing of it. Lisa is 55 years old-not five. Maybe she has never taken the time to learn about the world around her?

The culturally illiterate Lisa goes on to pan to the anchor and says, “Oh my gosh! Now Cuomo’s got it.” Then she adds, “And this dude,” when her camera moves to the male guest. “I can’t get over this. I can’t get over the Lent on the forehead on national television. Its just kind of freaking me out in a way.” I guess the only thing Beverly Hills Lisa is used to seeing on foreheads are stitches and scars from recent brow lifts!
Next, Lisa pans to Chris in her video and says, “Erika, this one’s for you cuz I just read your tweet.” Which I assume is directed at Erika Jayne as she tweeted on Ash Wednesday that she has a crush on Chris. Then Lisa cackles-in only the way Lisa can cackle, “But I can’t get over this-I just can’t. I don’t know why.” I am sure her co-stars Kyle Richards, Denise Richards, Dorit Kemsley and Teddi Mellencamp Arroyave are glad Lisa left them out of her video!
Lisa manages to contain her laughing for a moment to say, “I mean, to all you Catholics…I…I…I’m not you know. It’s all good. But I just can’t.” Fortunately for her PR firm, the video did not last any longer. Oh…and maybe someone should tell the religious studies PhD Dr. Rinna that more than just Catholics observe lent. Millions of other Christians are also observant of this holy day.

From the comments posted by Instagram users, it is pretty clear that no one was a fan of Ms. Rinna’s cultural insensitivity. What prompted Lisa to post her video? Has she been hitting her pill bag again? Is she just trolling for attention? Does she think she is a stand up comedian? We may never know. But, as Maya Angelou once said so wisely, “When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.” We see you AGAIN, Lisa.
