Andy Cohen Reflects On Choice To Become A Single Dad

In December 2018, Andy Cohen announced that he was expecting his first child. It was a total surprise to the Bravo fandom. Just six weeks later Andy welcomed his son Benjamin Allen Cohen (and his full head of black hair). It really was a whirlwind for his fans. Now they want to know more.

The new father did not make the choice to become a single parent lightly.  Recently, Andy discussed his decision and why it was the perfect time for him to begin his journey into parenthood.

In an interview with People  Andy explained, “It’s not something in your mind – ‘Oh, I want to do this alone.’ But I like being alone.  To me it would have to be a very special person to say, ‘Let’s do this together.'”

He also mentioned that he might meet a special person some day and remarked, “That person could be having coffee down the street at this moment.”

Becoming a father was always something Andy. Even so, he admitted, “as a gay man, I never thought it was in the cards for me.”  He shared, “When I came out to my parents in 1998, my mom said she had to mourn the life that I wasn’t going to be able to have…getting married and having kids.”  That mindset shifted as Andy watched others in the gay community marry and start families.

Age also played a factor.  Andy said, “turning 50 also played a big part.  I just realized that now was the time.”  Once the decision was made in December of 2017, he said he lived “life as though it was my last year on the planet.”  Andy explained, “I knew that I was turning a page on that chapter in my life. It’s not to say that I can’t go to a party anymore, but things are changing.”

The responsibility of being a new dad hit the Watch What Happens Live host the first night he had baby Benjamin in his New York City apartment.  Andy admitted, “I will say, my first night back in New York City, I had a moment where I was in the apartment and he was upstairs and I was like, ‘Wow, man, this is on you,’ and it was heavy.”

Fortunately for Andy, he has a tremendous support system to help him along the way which he admits to already leaning on for support.   He says he has a ton of help from friends, a baby nurse and “a swarm of women around me who are ready to love on this boy”.  Is he referencing the hundred or so Real Housewives?

Andy explained the impact of fatherhood on his approach to dating.  He said, “I’ll be looking for guys you want to bring home to mom or bring home to your son.” He emphasized, “It’s not going to be a revolving door of ‘This is your new uncle.’ ”

What we all really want to see is a revolving door of Housewives spending time with Benjamin!  If life anything like Andy’s baby shower, Benjamin’s life is going to be EPIC!!!
