NeNe Leakes is used to facing tough audiences – first on Real Housewives Of Atlanta, and now on Broadway in Cinderella, which debuted last night! Admitting that dealing with the negativity of Housewives has well-prepared her for criticism from critics and fans, NeNe also shares that her self-confidence has helped her shine through the haters!
“Working on ‘Housewives’ can be very negative at times. I think that’s the way (the producers) position the show. I’m the original — I’m the center of the show. Every season they want someone to come for me,” NeNe explains. “It’s tough. Broadway is more about the work and the art. It’s being creative. And every one wants to go out there and deliver and put on a good show. It’s very positive.”

NeNe pans RHOA for hurting her self-esteem and giving her trust issues – no doubt her recent friendship breakup with Cynthia Bailey contributed to that – but NeNe concedes that overall the show has been good for her. “The show has definitely damaged me to the point where I don’t want to make friends with new people.”
“People who I open up, later on they turn on me once they get a raise on the show,” NeNe complains. “I always think to myself, ‘God, these people will work for a $1.50 to do ANYTHING.’ I just can’t do it.”
Now, of course, NeNe is right that reality TV has ruined many a friendships, but she once turned on Kim Zolciak to be the most popular Housewife. In the end, once NeNe’s career catapulted her out the reality TV genre, she and Kim ‘forgave’ each other and are once again friends.
NeNe goes on to share that sometimes she doesn’t even want to show up for RHOA shoots because of all the unpleasantness. “It is hard, I’m telling you,” she tells NBCNewYork. “I promise it will take everything in your body to do that.” It’s pretty well-established that this will be NeNe’s last season on the show, despite Andy Cohen‘s adoration of her.
In the end, NeNe is very thankful for Bravo and the opportunities RHOA has given her. “There are some things along the way that I wish I hadn’t said. Like when me and my husband had our issues, or some of the conversations I had with my son,” NeNe admits. “But there aren’t things I really regret. The show has been amazing for me, and opened up many doors for me. So for that I am very grateful to Bravo.”
As NeNe begins her run on Cinderella, she confesses,”I am scared of my debut.” But compared to reality TV, she thinks she can handle anything! And she promises to bring her RHOA “sass” to her performance. “I don’t know if you’ll see that the first night, but I hope I can grow into that.”
