Last night on Project Runway it was the dreaded “real women” challenge. I so hate this challenge. First of all, I just want to see amazing clothes and I want to minimize anything that involves bitching designers, throwing tantrums, and refusing to try at making decent clothes for “regular people.”
The special twist was that the “real people” were nominated by a friend ala What Not To Wear and the PR bitchies were the poor slobs sent in to do the make-over. Really, really, really never was there a day that I wished for Clinton and Stacey more!
There’s not much to say about this challenge except that the usual bitch queens were even more bitch queens and Ven’s arrogance was the most plus-sized thing in that workroom. He was horrid every step of the way and I felt terrible for his client – both for her so-called make-over AND because he was so dismissive of her. Not only that, but he was blaming his attitude and design flaws on her for being “fat” and “unhappy.”
He was terrible from start to finish and thankfully his fellow designers were all disgusted by his attitude. I just want to remind you that: “Working with the plus-sized is very, very challenging.” Isn’t Ven plus-sized? His horrible client should just go shop at Kardashian Kollection! <<eye roll>>
The most surprising thing was that Gunnar was extremely pleasant and concerned about his client. It made me kinda like him. Sure, sure – it was the reality TV gods tripping with us and trying to make us like a snippy, snide queen whose evil spider monkey hiss still haunts me in my sleep. Anyway, good for your mantsie pantsie for being real person and letting your lady shine. Too bad the outfit was a hot hideous mess!

Project Runway Season 10, Episode 6

Christopher
Christopher: This was pretty flattering and I appreciated that it was wearable and simple, however it was so boring and department store. I want more oomph from everyone's favorite drama queen! -
Dmitry
Dmitry: This was a strong contender for the win according to the judges. Look - it was a pretty dress, fitted nicely, but it had no drama or interest! It was just a dress. I think a lot of these designers mistook wearable and "real" with boring. They can all cruise on down to Macys and grab these looks, the challenge was to give real women FASHION they can use everyday. They should have thought about last week's challenge for these women. PS - I still love you Dmitry -
Elena
Elena: She was surprisingly composed during this challenge and treated her model with respect and care. Are her antics all for effect? I actually liked this look and thought it was flattering. Elena was able to maintain her aesthetic while pleasing her client and truly making her look great and classic. I was surprised this wasn't in the Top 3. -
Fabio
Fabio! Congratulations! He won this challenge and his model was thrilled with her look. I think Fabio won because his dress was much more fashion-forward than the other designers and it really married his style, his model's style, and fashion as opposed to department store looks. The belt was abominable as were the "booties" but overall this was successful and his model looked fantastic. -
Gunnar
Gunnar: Oh sweet mercy. What was that mess? His model was the sweetest lady and she adored this look, but it was tragical in everyway. Poorly rendered, juvenile, and totally unsophisticated! It was like a little girl's dress for a grown woman. I have no idea how on earth this made it to the Top 3. I thought perhaps this was an editing error and they meant to say bottom 3, but nope! At least she liked it. -
Melissa
Melissa: oh, girl... you got lucky with this one. Eeks! I applaud her for trying to squeeze her style into the model's but this was the wrong everything for her model. Wrong cut, wrong style, wrong length, wrong bodice. It was not flattering, the material looked cheap, and the shawl was ridiculous. This made her model look very pear-shaped and flat chested. Also the fit was very off. -
Nathan
Oh, Nathan. So sweet, so silly, so foolish. Tim's face when Nathan said midrift. He gasps. Nathan sacrificed his own style completely for his model's. She loved it, but HE is the expert here and should have stepped up. Also, these women were here because their style was questionable so yeah, even more reason for him to put his foot down. The shape was flattering, but the materials and style were cheap as hell. It looked like a figure skating costume! -
Sonjia
Sonjia: The idea behind this was good, but the shape and style were all over the place. It was a like a designer bathtowel. Ick. Too short, too twisty, too vag-baring! What lady doesn't want to flash her cooch on the subway? -
Ven
Ven: 'Oh, god - she's a size 14 and she's 40! And she's frumpy and has no style! Ugh... I hate her. Die old fat lady. I dress models ONLY' Ven took his cues from Zoolander. He's a loser. This is MESS! And the true nightmare was Ven! He did not even try with this poor woman and that satin blouse was a shroud he basically safety pinned shut. The entire look was incredibly matronly. The skirt was absolutely hideous, too tight, and the wrong shape for her figure. The angled zipper made her look larger than she actually was and I have no idea what he was thinking with those sleeves! She was very gracious and deserves a make-over courtesy of Lifetime's wallet. -
Alcia
Alicia: The shape of this was fine, but all the details made it totally RHONJ! Cut-outs!? Micro Mini?! Eeks. The fit was horrendous. Alicia is very, very, very lucky the judges must have forgotten about her this week because this was cheap Forever 21 wear that has no business on any fashion runway. What a disappointment! At least her client loved it. 'More SEXY! MORE MORE SEXY! Girl... you're naked. More sexy! That's how their dialogue went... '
