American Idol Recap: All Hail The Queen

There are a mere six left on American Idol, with Wednesday night being Queen night.  What’s not to love about that?

The show opens with a Queen cover band performing everyone’s favorite “Somebody to Love.”  After a fabulous rendition, AI sends the remaining crew to TMZ for some “media training.”  Good luck with that!  The first two up are Elise Testone and Jessica Sanchez.  Jessica doesn’t get the best critique from Jimmy (the judges liked her) for her “Bohemian Rhapsody,” but she blew everyone away with her “Dance With My Father” by Luther VanDross.  Randy Jackson couldn’t find a thing wrong with her performance.  Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez loved Elise’s Queen cover, but Randy and Steven think she made a poor song choice with her Jimi Hendrix pick.  She finds herself the first contestant banished to the bottom three.

My all-time favorite-voted-off-too-early AI veteran Casey Abrams joins Ryan Seacrest.  He advises the newbies to watch out for pranks.  Oh, Casey.  Wait, that’s this?  Casey says two things and is ushered off stage to make room for his counterpart from last season Stephano.  Really?  Did Katy Perry request that no other famous singers could perform the same night she did?

Hollie Cavanaugh and Joshua Ledet are the next pair in the hot seat.  Hollie sings Queen’s “Save Me” and Miley Cyrus‘ “The Climb.”  Those are two quite opposite tunes.  She gets mixed reviews from both Jimmy and the judges.  As for Joshua, after his “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” rendition,  JLo touts his time on stage as her favorite part of the show.  I do love some Joshua.  Even Jimmy loves him, which is rare!  His “Ready for Love” cover garners even more praise.  India Arie herself tweeted love for his performance.  Jimmy states that if Joshua is voted off tonight than something is very wrong with America.  Hollie joins Elise in the bottom three.

Katy Perry does a military inspired routine for her hit “Part of Me.”  I have to give props to her for always singing live…it isn’t always great (sorry!), but it’s genuine.  It’s also probably hard to catch your breath when singing and dancing at the same time…it’s like the anti-Britney.  After her song, the final two, Skylar Laine and Phillip Phillips are with Ryan.  Skylar receives good feedback from the judges (but really, are they ever negative?) for “The Show Must Go On” and she rocked Jason Aldean’s “Tattoos On This Town.”  Jimmy wasn’t a fan of her second song, but I think she was totally in her element.

Wednesday, Phillip sang Queen’s “Fat Bottom Girl” and I disagree with the judges’ adoration…I think he was “eh.”  He also performed Dave Matthews “The Stone” which is one of my favorites.  Both songs divide the judges.  Jimmy thinks he sealed his fate, and not in a good way, with both song choices.  Phillip manages to save himself and Skylar joins Elise and Hollie.  Before she can even sit down, Ryan deems Skylar the fourth contestant safe from elimination.  Elise gets a much deserved standing ovation after Ryan declares her the next eliminated.  She represented my home state well!  However, I could live my whole life with never hearing again Scotty McCreery’s version of Tim McGraw’s “Remember Me.”
